Out of state Ute here, I know essentially nothing about Weber States football program other than they lost in the first round of the FCS playoffs last year. What are they good at? Any player or matchup that might be somewhat interesting?

It’ll be like our other FCS games. Closer than expected at half, Utah cruises to a comfortable win 40ish to 14ish. Whitt won’t do anything that completely embarrasses Jay Hill.

Utah’s last three FCS openers were 9-6, 17-10 and 17-9 at the half (@BYU, Vs. WSU, Vs. North Dakota)

Is Rashid Shaheed back for another year? I think he’s their big offensive weapon at receiver and returner:

Jay Hill is in his 8th year at Weber St. after leaving Utah? He’s the D-Coordinator. Weber St is 26-3 in Big Sky games the last 3 years.

I expect they will be tough just by way of who the coach is and how well they’ve done in the big sky. I don’t know if they are a running or passing team. I expect like others who’ve commented that we start looking slow and Weber comes out hyped. But we pull away to win by 30ish in the 2nd half.

Should be good prep for byu-p

A lot of their coaching staff have Utah ties. Joe Dale is their Co-defensive coordinator, other position coaches are former Ute players.

I expect they will be fundamentally sound and play clean (good ball security, low penalties) because that’s what good teams at every level do, and they are a good FCS team. But they won’t be able to match up man-for-man against Utah’s physicality, strength, and athleticism.

In other words, they’ll remind you of Utah, but they just won’t do it as well as Utah does.

On the radio today, Jay Hill said he is backing away from the defensive coordinator responsibility to focus on recruiting, Covid protocols and other overall team responsibilities. Focus more on total team than just defense.
