Let’s assume two scenarios: 1: Williams at QB, 2: Huntley at QB – What do we need to do to beat ASU, besides score more points than they do?

ironman1315Participant
Don’t let them steal our signals.

I think we should give fake signals for Graham. Like “sweep left” and then have a bootleg pass right or something like that.

15 SACKS!!!

Yeah boiiiiii, 15!!!

Speaking of that, Brady Quinn made me laugh pretty hard last year. “You get a sack! And you get a sack!”

Throw to open receivers. 🙂

MotherJabubuParticipant
100 yards rushing, 250 yards passing. win turnover battle. score TDs in redzone.

Block. Our O line needs to be ready. When I watched the UW game I was shocked at how they got after Browning. They had a myriad of blitzes. This game, like all PAC 12 games, kind of scares me. They’ve got swag…

Huntley can be a blitz equalizer.

First scenario is a loss no matter how you spin in it. Second scenario is a win because Huntley is that much better than Williams.
-
ladyinredParticipant
Huntley is better, but Williams still has what it takes to beat ASU. He did it last year.
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
Beat USC last year didn’t go so well this season. Blew it against Stanford at home to who I don’t think is very good.
-
ladyinredParticipant
I realize Williams has his shortcomings, and that’s why he lost the starting job, but we can still win games with him. Meanwhile look at every other team in the PAC. If they lost their starting QB the drop off would be yuuuge to the next guy. Look at Oregon. They are going to struggle to make a bowl after losing Herbert.
Our situation is not ideal, but it’s enviable still to have such depth at QB.
Also, might I remind you that the last second TD last year could’ve gone either way as well…
-
EagleMountainUteParticipant
You don’t think Utah will struggle to make a Bowl game with Williams? It sure looks that way I am merely confident that Huntley will be back.
Huntley makes up for the deficiencies in the Pass pro.
Utah is finally improving in the rush so maybe it will be another 50/50 game.
-
Ute BcParticipant
I don’t think many people had us winning at USC this year. No reason to think that Williams couldn’t or wouldn’t make us Bowl eligible – just like last year.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you, but I certainly have issues with our o-line and d-line. Lots of room for improve there.

The blitz A LOT. I hope Troy Taylor has a good game plan to make them pay for it.
-
AllInUteFanParticipant
I agree. They blitzed UW and Oregon incessantly. Arizona’s blitz disrupted us far more than it should have. Hopefully Taylor and Harding have better protection packages ready for this game.
-
ironman1315Participant
Quick slants into the vacated area. That’ll slow them up right quick.

These are the priorities that I think they need to focus on to win:
Red Zone – Utah would arguably be 6-0 with just a small improvement in the Red Zone. Need to score points when they’re available.
Take Care of the Ball – self explanatory.
O-line – specifically pass protection due to ASU’s blitzing. I think we’ll see a lot more of those bubble screens.
Utilize Carrington – regardless of which QB is at the helm, we need to get Carrington involved.
Cover the Middle of the Field – Stanford & USC showed that all you have to do is send a receiver up the middle over and over. N’Keal makes this task harder, so the Secondary is up for a tough challenge.
Feed Moss – get him like 20 to 25 touches.

BTW this is geeky but I think these guys do a good job breaking down UW’s failures at ASU.
Good points about what UW struggled with provides a blueprint for Utah:https://www.uwdawgpound.com/2017/10/17/16485618/film-study-husky-offense-stymied-in-the-desert

Comes down to the o-line, they’ve been dreadful in a lot of areas.

Score a defensive TD, AND a special teams TD. This year our offense has not outscored our opponents. Think about it so far this year we’ve had two or three defensive TDs. One was against USC.
We also need four turnovers, with one being scooped or returned for aforementioned TD.
Against Arizona Guidry had a pick 6, we won. Against Stanford we had not ST/Defensive scores, we lost. Against USC Blair had the scoop and score, we lost by one.
So we need some Boobie, and Guidry/Blair.
