KW talked about it a bit in his news conference on Monday.  I have wondered this for years.  We seem to start slowly.  There are some exceptions, but traditionally we start slowly on both sides of the ball.

Our overall first quarter score this season is 76-73.  It is our lowest scoring quarter and is is by far our worst quarter on defense.

On the other hand – the second quarters score for the season is 101-42 and the third is 88-37 and the fourth is 80-56.

There is a pattern here and I believe it has been this way for years.  Any thoughts as to why?  The good news is that we appear to make halftime adjustments and we typically are killing it in the third quarter.  However, against UW and WSU we only scored a total of 3 points in the third.

I hope this changes this Saturday night.  I would like to come out and score three first quarter touchdowns.

I think it takes time for our defenseive line to wear down the opposing team’s offensive line, and for our big offensive line to wear down the opposing defensive line.  That’s one thing.

Think of it more as a study session in the 1st. See how the other team is going to play the game, see if they are going to put a wrinkle in our prep.

To me, this shows that the Utes adjust better than we tend to think as fans. Some of this is also that we are a very physical team, and it often takes a bit to really wear down the players on the other side (both on O and D). It is a lot harder to stay up than get up.
