We all love Coach Whit but the time has come to move on. Here are my reasons.
1) Whit has emphasized defense to his own detriment. He’s taken promising offensive players and moved them to defense. His philosophy of being conservative and letting his defense win games at the end of games makes it difficult to recruit talent, especially in the “throw” game. You have to outscore high powered offenses in the game today. Nobody wants to play for teams that are run first, second and third in philosophy and become “blocking” receivers.
2) He’s lost a step in recognizing talent. Who was the last running back that was all conference or wide out or QB that we recruited?? You can move players around to other positions, but you shouldn’t have to if you recruit players at the position who have the talent to succeed.
3) Serious lapses in planning ahead. In this day of the portal. your forward planning should never be a true freshman quarterback as plan B, especially with the injury history of Cam Rising. There have been too many cases of being thin at various positions including safeties, linebackers and running backs.
4) Not using the portal effectively. How can byu go out and get 3-4 receivers who make ours look like 3rd stringers? How can former OC Aaron Roderick make them look like NFL draft picks. Was it because Whit’s philosophy of defense first and foremost smothers and surpasses all other objectives?
In conclusion, we wish Coach the best. We just need more innovation and a fresh reboot of the offense. When Ludwig came back we had a new approach utilizing tight ends, that was amazing. In this day and age you have to re-invent yourself. No new philosophy lasts because teams figure you out. You need developing strategies as seasons go on to keep opposing defenses guessing more of what you are and can do. I think we all kind of know what we are.

As for #1 – part of this issue is the rule changes. The games rules are set up to score a lot of points. You can’t fight the system. When the system says “score points” you trying to not score points as your main emphasis is too hard.
2- part of this is Whitt can’t keep players long enough. Look at JaQuindon Jackson and Greg Lloyd. Jackson bailed before his “breakout” season. Had we kept Jackson for this year, he and Bernard each have 1,000+ yards and we roll through the Big 12. Jackson left and both Whitt and Jackson played on mediocre teams because of it.
Greg Lloyd, on the other hand, came back, had a great year and was drafted high.
3 – there is no planning ahead anymore. Get the best players you can, assume everyone is transferring when the season is over. The days of loyalty and development are gone, sadly.
4- is Whitt. He doesn’t allow the offense to play like this. We will never have this with Whitt because he doesn’t want it.
Like I’ve said, my hope is Scalley takes over. You can’t have two Head Coaches. But if Whitt stays, I want him as a Dan Campbell/Nick Siriani head coach. No real decision making on game day. An organizer and morale booster.

Some of these I agree with others I disagree with. Regardless, I want Whit to stay. He’s one of the great coaches in the country, not just coaches, but CEO’s of a CFB team. It’s a lot more than just coaching. I hope he stays.
