First, let me say that I am and will always be big Whitt fan because of what he did with Utah football. However, there comes a time when you move on. The time is now because our program is a total disaster. We have 6 straight losses with a possibility of 8. That would be a record we don’t want.

Whitt has been paid very well and has a very lucrative contract. The university cannot afford to fire him, and they probably don’t want to do that because of Whitt’s past success. So, Whitt is in the driver’s seat and can stay for at least three more years and rake in some big bucks. I don’t think Whitt is greedy but …

The Utah football program needs to be rebuilt while we still have some talent to build around. I hope Kyle decides to step down. The mood in the locker room is bad from all reports and it is completely understandable. Turn the team over to Scalley, and maybe (hopefully) there will be a new level of excitement.

I am not suggesting that anyone else’s opinion is wrong and I am right. This is just one fan’s opinion. I think we need to shake things up. We have not been this bad since the Fassel era.

I too was thinking about the Fassel angle over the weekend and dismissed it because he went on to find success in the “league”.

Yes, he found some success in the NFL. He had a great offensive mind and used it as a QB coach, then coordinator and eventually head coach. The Giants organization surrounded him with great people and he went to a Super Bowl. In the end – he got fired from the Giants too.

The point for Utah is – we need to rebuild and I don’t think Whitt is the person to get the attitude of the team to change. He has lost this team. Is it all his fault? No, but he does have to take some of the blame. The team needs someone new. Scalley needs to come in and be different than coach Whitt. Use the things he learned from Whitt, but bring in your own schemes and organization.

Fassel had to go and it wasn’t all about wins & losses. His defensive coordinator was featured in a Sports Illustrated article with the players calling him “Little Hitler” and was charged with supplying steroids to athletes at South Carolina – he was acquitted. He claimed another time that there weren’t any issues with drugs on his team and then two (maybe 3) players ended up in jail for selling coke. Coaches could get away with a lot in the 80’s but embarrassing the University while losing games wasn’t one of them.
