If you could choose any Ute player from the PAC-12 era to play for this season only, who would you pick? What position group would shore up or make elite?
With what this team has currently, I’m torn. I would either select Bradlee Anae to provide the utes with a dominant threat off the edge, or Jaylon Johnson to play CB opposite of Phillips. I definitely think DE is more of a concern, but can you imagine what this defense would be like with 2 first-round caliber CBs? It would be a daunting task to even consider passing against the Utes at that point!
What do you all think? Who is your pick from the Ute Time Portal?

Covey. That kid just had a way of willing us to win.

I think Utah has the answers at LB, Safety and the Lines even if I don’t know who they are. And I have faith that the staff will eventually be able to figure out the best 11 on each side of the ball. But Utah has lacked a true gamechanger at WR, someone who demands double coverage and still makes the plays. That can be a force multiplier if employed properly.

To me, it has to be Star.

Another possibility would be Bolles.

I would choose our best Left Guard to protect Cam’s blindside. If we extend to MWC, the answer is Jordan Gross.

100% agree with this.

Wishnowsky or Gay… nobody else comes close.

Both are good choices. But, I hope not to have to kick field goals.

Would take Wishnowsky. Punting was a serious liability last year.

A clean Josh Gordon.

That’s asking a lot.

Lots of excellent choices stated so far. Part of me would love to take an area of strength and make it absolutely dominant (e.g. add Jaylon opposite Clark or add a Dimick/Anae to the DL or a Bolles to the OL). Adding Carrington to the WR room would be awesome too. Having the best TE room in the country AND a legit double cover WR1? Ridiculous. It would also be fun to put Marcus Williams in the back with Bishop; I’m already looking forward to Nate Ritchie playing with Bishop next year, but Marcus would be insane.
Ultimately, though, given that we have not yet seen this team play, I would probably go with either Matt Gay or Hackett/Mitch. Perhaps not the flashiest choice, but no single player will be the difference in any game where we are clearly outmatched (and not sure there are any such matchups on the schedule this year) but there will be some close games this year and ST play can and often is the difference in those games. If I have one worry right now, it’s ST.

JJ on the other side of Phillips would give us an amazing Pass D.

I’d go with Mitch Wishnowsky, but unsure if it’d make a huge difference if the punt blocking remains poor.

The most talented players in this era I think are Star, Jaylon Johnson, Devin Lloyd, Nate Orchard, Garrett Bolles, Marcus Williams, Mitch Wish, Matt Gay, Covey, Moss, Huntley. A few others you could throw in too for sure.
Our alternatives at most positions are solid, except OL. Going from Kump or Falcon to Garrett Bolles is a MASSIVE change. Love Jaren and Falcon, and they could be really good, but Bolles is an NFL LT, and pretty much any team in the nation would add him today if they could.
Add Garrett to this team and I’d feel A LOT better about our playoff hype.

Tucker would be the addition. The biggest plays of the game all year was when the opponent was punting. He was good enough to create a new all american position for himself, punt returner. He was a notch up from Covey.

Fakahafua, sorry, Orchard.
isn’t he the most filthy pass rusher of the era?
I’d take Bolles second. That oline was soooo amazing
-
RickParticipant
Garrett Bolles would be my first choice. If you had Bolles at LT and moved Daniels to LG you would absolutely destroy teams and no one would touch Cam. Second choice would be Marcus Williams because I am not sold on the FS position since we lost Vonte Davis from last year’s squad. Plus Marcus was the best safety in our team’s history (please do not say Weddle because he didn’t play safety for us).

TlsuteParticipant
Really happy I am not the only one who saw Marcus for what he was, best safety in team history and it isn’t all that close in my mind.
he took half the field away on each snap and would be an absolute nightmare next to bishop this season.
IMO most underrated player in the history of Utah football, had season tickets since 1998 and never have seen a safety close to his coverage abilities and we have had some sensational talent at that position.
no disrespect to Eric weddle that dude may be the all around best athlete we have ever had and an absolute badass on and off the field.

Give me Lloyd one more year…guy is a beast.

Gotta go with The 4.3 Retiree. He was a big play threat every time he touched the ball.
