bad call, holding is not a good call when the QB is on his back.
talk about holding, Van Fillinger was held just about every play all game long!
-
Ted LassoParticipant
I feel like this has been rehashed over and over again. Go watch the video. When the hold happens, Retzlaff is upright and looking straight at the receiver being held. I don’t know if Retzlaff could have gotten him the ball and we’ll never know, but the hold absolutely affected the play.
-
The Miami UteParticipant
That’s a barefaced lie and you know it. Retzlaff had maybe two seconds from the point the ball was snapped to the time he got sacked. It was a blown up play by the defense that never had a chance. In addition, the WR never even attempted to look back at the ball because the route tree was designed for him to get the ball much further down the field. You won. It’s over. But you’re never going to convince me that it was a legitimate penalty.
-
Ted LassoParticipant
We’ll never know what could have happened, because your guy held the receiver. I just rewatched the play, it took 3 seconds of game time for the defensive lineman to get to Retzlaff. The WR was held after the first second. Retzlaff had 2 seconds of Gametime to throw the ball, which is plenty of time to throw a ball.
You guys should be happy it was only a holding penalty and not a 91 yard touchdown, because the corner was beat. BYU earned this win.
I know it’s a highly unpopular opinion here but I’m sticking with it. I’m sorry the game had to end in such a sucky way. The game should have never been that close to begin with. I wish BYU would have had a more definitive win.
-
The Miami UteParticipant
Oh no…we definitely know what should have happened. That’s a sack on Retzlaff and an Utah win. At the end of the day, all BYU did is postpone irrelevance for one more week. Your program reminds me of those mediocre boxers who only fought palookas so they could have an undefeated record when they faced Tyson but would then get destroyed at the final stage. Have fun living the dream for a few more days.

2008 National ChampParticipant
Ted? What’s really the goal with carrying this conversation on?
This is what I’m talking about when I say that I’m okay with playing BYU the team but hate everything else about the rivalry. If that game was against Oregon, Washington or any team not named BYU we’d have our 24 hour pity party and already have moved on to next week. Maybe someone from another fanbase would stop by and we’d talk about all the great things that happened in a truly incredible game. They’d be understanding that we were upset by the timing of the call whether they agreed with us or not because calls fans don’t like happen to EVERY TEAM IN EVERY GAME. And we’d all move on looking forward to playing again next year.
This is turning in to a DNews comment section because BYU fan won’t let us go through the 5 stages of denial. Take the win, move on. You’ve got bigger things going on in your season and shouldn’t need to waste time trying to bend Utah fan to your will.

Hold or no hold if the ball is thrown to that receiver in the time retzlaf had on two feet it hits the receiver in the back. There was never an opportunity for this to materialize into a complete pass. It was definitely an ill advised call
-
2008 National ChampParticipant
And in your scenario, the call would have been PI not holding.

Hey Miami Ute, look at this video and tell me what you’re seeing.
New video angle of the Holdy War controversial play from the Ref's direction. Clear and indisputable IMO.

Hey Dolly, why don’t you go make me a sandwich…I’m hungry…
-
DallinParticipant
You want the same one your wife just made me?
-
The Miami UteParticipant
Hey Dolly, does your husband know that you’re sending naughty things to strange men on the internet? That’s so not BYU…but then again, I’ve heard all the stories…
-
DallinParticipant
Hey I don’t judge, but I’m gonna respectfully decline. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of younger men who would be more than happy with an older gentleman such as yourself. May I suggest Grindr? I’ve heard that’s right up your kinds alley.
-
The Miami UteParticipant
You mean you’re gay??? Don’t worry, I won’t tell. It’ll be our little secret. I wouldn’t want to get you excommunicated. I actually thought that you were a woman…I mean, with a name like Dolly how could I not make that mistake?
-
DallinParticipant
Unfortunately I’m not. I know you were just getting your hopes up too. Just when you thought things were going your way and had the win secured.

2:30 pm three days later- Still trying to convert us heathens to your view point.
Please! It won’t happen. What we are saying is that in a physical bitter rivalry game, in a physical conference, with all of the non calls in that game for similar contact plays it shouldn’t have been called. That’s our opinion and the nice thing about opinions is they are like something else that you should wipe from time to time. We’re over it- you should be too!-

2:55 pm three days later- still replying to a BYU fan. You’re not over it.
I’m having a great time, not sure what your problem is.

These TDS fans are more worried about converting everyone to believe that was the right call than converting them to their religion. JFC, move the hell on. You won’t convince us otherwise on that call. It’s almost like you guys aren’t convinced…
-
The Miami UteParticipant
That’s exactly it…they have a guilt complex over it. They know that as long as there’s one Utah fan that believes that the wrong call was made, they won’t be able to put it past them. I’m sure some of them are having dreams where Brigham Young himself is visiting them and telling them to repent.
-
UtahMan98Participant
It’s funny how the script has flipped on them. During the 9 game win streak I heard every excuse in the book on why TDS didn’t win. Most of them revolved around poor officiating. My former brother-in-law was a huge zoob and couldn’t admit TDS lost any game. They were either cheated out of a win by the refs or that they simply “lost the game” but it wasn’t because the Utes were better. The hypocrisy is mind numbing. This is why many fans don’t enjoy the rivalry. I’m starting to find myself in that camp.
-
The Miami UteParticipant
I’m already in that camp. Playing BYU is like being in a boat with a bunch of deranged people. Their zealotry is a spectacle to behold.
