ParticipantCalifornia Nevada Arizona and Idaho all have large alumni groups. There are pockets in Texas and Florida due to recruiting

ParticipantYes. Utah offered him a very good NIL deal. Which is why most recruiting experts felt it was down to Utah and Texas for him. I don’t know exactly what Utah was offered. Utah keeps a very tight lip on NIL deals. I was just told it was very competitive to other P4 offers. Tech came out of nowhere with ridiculous numbers.
Texas Tech is the BYU of college football. They have new money funding their NIL and are willing to significantly overpay to get top players.
This isn’t over yet. Texas may counter if they get desperate enough.
The good news is Utah can take the NIL money they had sent aside for him and use it on another high profile recruit down the road.

ParticipantCanadian taxes are brutal but he should be ok.
He’s entering his prime and is basically a double double every night.

ParticipantUtah is not poor.
There are middle to upper middle class. Plus they don’t flaunt it.
They are not overpaying like BYU to get players. BYU will not get the return on investment.Utah puts value limits on certain players and positions.
They also don’t play “the game.” An example are the Pula twins. They want to be Utes but their agent/handler is slowing playing Utah holding them out for possibly better offers and Whit is this close to cutting them loose.
Utah makes very competitive offers to players and that’s it. Plus Whit hates NIL and will drive him to retirement. He won’t play “the game”.
The coaching staff very much believes you are all in or in the way and you should want to be a Ute for many many reasons none of which are NIL.
Utah is also switching recruiting philosophy. They will still recruit HS and JC kids but the focus for both football and basketball is gonna be the portal going forward.

ParticipantFrom the Horses mouth.
“We are going to focus less and less on kids from HS and fill our immediate needs with players from the portal”. “High School players with fill depth gaps.”

ParticipantThe only thing that has me concerned is QB and DL depth.
If Dampier goes down it’s gonna be year three of offensive struggles.
Same thing if any of the 4 man rotation at DL get hurt. Everything in Whit’s D plays off the DTs eating up blocks and letting LBs make plays. IF the interior DL suffers a bunch or injuries it will be a long season of watching teams run up and down on Utah’s D

ParticipantRyder is LDS and the Lyons name has a long history at BYU. They should be the favorites to sign him at a discounted NIL rate but they are not.
They are still overpaying to sign a LDS legacy kid because the optics of losing him to USC or Oregon just doesn’t look good in the churches eyes.
They are not winning.
They are paying considerably more than other schools to get these recruits in FB and BB. With no guaranteed return.
