I think if that happens you’ll see a lot of schools drop football and maybe all sports if the contractual relationship is enforced extensively. Once you sign a contract, you become an employee and I’m not certain that most schools are ready to go that route.

I think in the NFL there’s room for anyone that’s dynamic and make plays. Doug Flute was only 5’8′ and he had a long and eventful NFL career. Even Murray is set for life. Smith is in the third year of a six year contract. I have to imagine that if by the end of next season there’s no discernible sense of progress, Utah will can him. At that point, Utah would only have to swallow $3.7M of his buyout, making it more palatable.

Man, that’s a tough ask for a guy that really hasn’t played the QB position at a competitive level in college. Plus it’s not really his choice but the coaching staff’s.
