The stats are all a big part of understanding but not all. Not in any box score / stat sheet are all the little things specific to position and switching, on both offense and defense. Coaches like for example Rick, can get very specific about what they want players to do. They practice and go over the concepts that are not so much for every coach…[Read more]

One of those nights. In crunch time they left Dawes open for a 3, that is not his shot, and we needed a bucket. I thought oh no, but he drained the shot.

I have not noticed it so much in other games but tonight I could see being tired factor into FT shooting. In the first half we shot FTs very well. Coming down the stretch we were tired but then so was the Y. You could see they wanted to foul Lovering at the end. I think it was at the end of regulation with seconds the Y got loose on the base line…[Read more]

Player health and availability is not always binary, ready to go or not ready. Could he have a health issue that reduces availability without becoming unavailable? Then again, development is a thing and one of the development tools is playing time to get to a desired end. Or very likely off court issues like mentioned. This may be analysis without…[Read more]

Part of settling down the rotation is consistency and that extends to what the other team is prepared for. Sometimes developments disappear when the next team prepares for a specific thing better. Either way, we seem to be settling into more options and better options. Figuring that out with matchups that change game to game is difficult. We tend…[Read more]

Being retired and trying to have 700 on while working the the garage etc., has become very difficult. Pretty much an all time low. For some reason the SLC radio market tries to attract Y and U fans together even though there are several stations. In the old days, you flipped to KSL to hear about the Y and KALL to hear about the Utes. Even both…[Read more]

This is, I believe, a concept that is not understood by many. There are precious few programs with the critical mass and momentum to change coaches, replace legions and simply hit the ground running. I so much wish Utah was one but I think I grasp the brutal facts of our reality that Utah is one of the schools in the tier that fight hard just to…[Read more]

We have been thin recruiting DL players that are around 300 lbs for a couple of years. Odd because for years we have been deep with this need. Raass may be a RM coming in at some point but may take some time warming up. The two we lost to the portal, at this point, would appear to have created a problem in the middle. Currently, we have no backups…[Read more]

I think spots can be won in the spring and with so many new guys, who is at spring practice will have impact. I am wondering if Kaufusi will be inside or outside. There is lots of young LB talent but I expect Barton and Damuni to be the ones we see most the time. If any of the young talent has cover skills they could see time at SS. Johnson will…[Read more]

Guillory may be a development player, however, it is not often we see someone with 25 power 4 offers. Will be interesting to see the spring roster.

I grew up listening to sports on the radio because TV games were few, attending a game was a real treat. Today, or better yet before the Big 12, all the games were on TV and access to attending games are way up for kids. Additionally, there are so many more entertainment options. Easy to pass and maybe catch the next game. I spent several years in…[Read more]

I have spent several years coaching youth football and basketball. I have also spent years watching my kids in sports. I expect my experiences have a lot to do about my opinion about this subject. Of course, I could not at all imagine booing my kids or their teams even due to any imaginable errors or mistakes. I can be disappointed but can’t boo.…[Read more]

Keep in mind Kenan Johnson started over Calhoun when healthy and he is coming back. Rabbit Evans is another awesome replacement. Tanavasa and Pepa were good for the DT group, however, Utah always seems to have an embarrassment of riches at this position.

CU has clearly realized a big gain recently in the football landscape, however, there is no reason to believe this gain will persist longer than Sanders and there is no reason to believe he will remain in Colorado much beyond his sons eligibility. ASU has achieved AAU status but in the academic world there is a pecking order even at this level and…[Read more]

I don’t know how this works. Can another school contact athletes that are not in the portal and make offers? Can an athlete contact other schools to gain an offer without entering the portal? Oddly, this only gets under control when the schools with the most money become convinced it needs control.

The degree from Cal or top schools was very respected 40 years ago. Not so much the case anymore since it has been revealed that there are so many entry options beyond simple merit. But as Miami pointed out, the degree matters. A tech or engineering degree has a higher degree of difficulty then maybe liberal arts. Sadly, I am not sure all medical…[Read more]

Men are bigger and stronger on the BB court than the women, however, the lady utes shoot FT better than the men. How could there be a reason? Our ladies were 78% at the FT last year. To solve this problem have a mid week free throw contest between the men and women, the winner each week gets preference over the basketball resources for the…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic What were the rumors about Wilson? in the forum Football 3 months, 3 weeks ago
It may be hard to gain that insight directly, however, if coaches let a key guy go without effort to retain them I begin to believe the coaches also see value in the change. The future QB leaving should leave signs that the coaches tried to retain the player. Because coaches don’t want to be know as someone to make negative aspects of a player…[Read more]
