Charlie replied to the topic Vaki should move to offense full-time in the forum Football 1 year, 2 months ago
Well, he leads the team on tackles, second on TFL, and tied for 4th with TFLs in the Pac 12. That is a somewhat important guy on defense. I agree, he is also an uncommonly gifted offensive player with vision few have. What to do? I expect going forward he will have a lot to say about his preference, he will be very wanted by both sides, and I…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Have we seen Barnes' ceiling as a QB? in the forum Football 1 year, 2 months ago
We should keep in mind that Barnes in HS was 1A. I don’t know how many of us have peered into HS football in rural, small school America at that level. I expect he never got to learn or experience football before college on the level that 98% of D1 athletes experience in HS or even in middle school. I am fairly sure there is not little league…[Read more]

Myself, I think what was holding him back was the ability to make quick decisions. He was quicker tonight than in the Cal game but not as quick as the league’s top QBs. Next week, maybe a bit quicker still?

The last TD was a gift so Utah could get the ball back with time on the clock. Watch a replay, Utes were not hiding the intent much at all. Never the less, the gift made Williams jump for joy.

I think the coaches have this. RBs rotate anyway and the safeties can rotate as well. I think they are very aware of a total pitch count. Unless they see errors that would relate to not being fully prepared, let him live in the rare air of being a two way star.

I don’t expect to see a ceiling with so few starts, his ceiling is not too much higher but he can win more games.

Two things I was hoping we would avoid. I felt the 4 DL men were the strength of USC’s defense and was feeling we had called runs between the tackles too much. Delayed draws after they are in rush lanes ok but not quick runs inside. The second was for the love of God don’t let #1 return kicks. Tempting fate there almost cost us.
Letting Williams…[Read more]

As on explanation, a great deal is accomplished in fall camp and the non conference schedule. How many freshman backups miss these two periods and do catch up? Maybe it was close enough that Rose has to catch others where they are now and that is difficult with all the focus on the two that may play game to game.

Charlie replied to the topic All the Pressure in on USC – Can Utah Take Advantage? in the forum Football 1 year, 2 months ago
It will become easier to beat USC as the season continues, however, the first Pac team to beat them will have the greatest satisfaction. USC feeds off success and the complementary expectations but that also makes them more venerable to downward spirals that are hard to reverse.

Charlie replied to the topic Concerns for tomorrow in the forum Football 1 year, 3 months ago
Most all of the things to worry about Utah has a good record of being able to address, except we have often struggled with elusive QBs running running on the edge when pass plays break down. If we can limit that I think Utah can find a way thru most concerns.

I am fine with development of rules related to NIL. However, personal information does not need to be public. The DN only wants it because they know it would be of interest by readers. That does not make it right.
Along the same thought, the public needs to have more information about the media industry because of its influence. They should…[Read more]

My guess the players have a lot of input into uniforms. They wear them, they should make these kind of choices, all within reason. If someone wants to dress the fans I think there could be several great suggestions.

Out of the endzone is fine if executed 9 out of 10 times. If that is not realistic do whatever it takes to eliminate a return. A high kick that can be covered to force a fair catch works but there should be lots of focus around making sure he can’t start a return. He is that good.

Interesting, a sophomore graduate transfer. I expect that prep for USC has seen the 1s practice with the dime package which with rotations could involve as many as 8 DBs. This week may have made very clear the pecking order in the secondary.

Or,
The recovery is not leaner, the final steps spread out.
There could have been setbacks that were not discussed.
Cam’s ratio of hope to critical understanding may not be even.
Could the Dr. have given Cam reason to exceed expectations?
Is it possible he is actually close but continued short of final data points? In my experience I give much…[Read more]

Can we, for the love of God, count on Utah to kick away from #1 in the USC game to keep him from attempting a return? I would prefer to see squib kicks, punts out of bounds, touchbacks or kicks specifically to anyone else on the field. With our experience with Covey, we should understand this well.

Ganther is in his second year as RB coach. I think his start is the three Freshmen RBs that I think came in in the fall. Too soon to see how he develops them. Is your point McDonald left the cupboard bare?
