I think practice will be complete Thursday. Friday may be walk-thru only but certainty too late to impact practice for the week.

I am a bit surprised so many may not understand Onlyu’s comment about “being cleared and game ready is two different things”. Whitt can’t give us an answer because there are many other factors beyond being cleared that can be changing daily. Cam can be the best QB by a large margin as well as cleared but only equally capable to other QBs at a…[Read more]

Or Whitt is trying to heighten the competition. Then given recent QB turnover history I can understand angst about it all.

The plan to replace Rising has been in action longer than a year as we were expecting him to leave after the ’22 season. This plan is much more developed than the one for the replacement of Brewer when Rising was much of an unknown. Now we have two capable options instead of the single option for a replacement for Brewer.
Until we see Rising for…[Read more]

I expect Rutgers may want to help USC understand what they will experience or Vanderbilt may help Texas and Oklahoma with ideas, but with more experience.

Charlie replied to the topic A lot of blame gets tossed at various schools in the forum Pac-12 1 year, 5 months ago
I agree. The problem is college football is controlled by a few media companies that themselves do not work together. Each media company has a very short term self interest that is overwhelming. College football will continue to struggle mightily until there is a single entity on the athletic side that calls the shots for at least an entire…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic I am really, really sad about the death of the PAC in the forum Pac-12 1 year, 5 months ago
I believe USC and Oregon were dominating the leadership that was not up to the task. USC blocked expansion and other moves that would have made the PAC stronger only to get frustrated by their own decisions and move to a conference dominated by better leadership. USC athletics in particular has been rolling gutter balls again and again since we…[Read more]

I think the PAC / ACC thing could have happened if Colo would not have jumped the gun. I think they did so because they felt if they were not first and the Big 12 had their choice of PAC teams they could have easily been left out. But when Colo did jump, things began to move to fast for anything but life boats to be considered. The root of all of…[Read more]

Since college athletics intends to be fair a team salary cap is good. An athlete can make anything they want but there can be a limit for a team to remain eligible. Reporting can be a requirement. Exceeding the limit is an eligibility issue not a legal issue. Contacting an athlete that is not in the portal can be prohibited for teams to remain…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Sharp College football did a great deep Utah breakdown in the forum Football 1 year, 5 months ago
Every defensive strategy is an acceptance of risk points to gain advantage in other aspects. In press man defense there is an attempt to control best early in the count. When the defense gives up yards it is often viewed as a coverage mistake. Not only can our DBs make cover mistakes but cover can be strained to breaking point by too slow pass…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Steve Bartle interview in the forum Football 1 year, 5 months ago
We have a smaller than usual list of open items which encourages me. We also have possibilities for each open item, we just need to see the outcomes. QB is a big open item, however at the start of 2021 we really didn’t know what we had in Rising. Can Rose or Johnson be a similar unknown? Two possibilities to get one is good odds. We don’t know…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Which man had the biggest effect on Utah sports? in the forum Other Ute Sports 1 year, 6 months ago
There is not just one. McBride changed the direction of football in the biggest way, Meyer added speed to that change and Whitt has kept it moving. McBride was the game changer. Gardner changed the direction of basketball, Pimm and others added speed to that change and Majerus took it to the top. Hill was an administer that was a good as any in…[Read more]

In addition, I think a few transfers will figure in by the end of the season. If Pittman get healthy that will be noticed. Battle does have promise as does Logan Fano. Damuni may fill in like Reid last year where his best games come down the last stretch. Love to see Becker win games for us. Of the bunch, Pittman, I think, has the highest ceiling…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Potential RB Commit in the forum Football 1 year, 6 months ago
I don’t worry about this because the coaches do. I remember an interview with Peterson from TCU where they questioned his strategy to recruit a high number of HS QBs and RBs. It came up when he had a DE that became an AA but was a HS QB or RB. He explained in Texas most often the best 2 athletes on the team are the QB and RB regardless of their…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic The stats and the computer rank Utah 14th in the forum Football 1 year, 6 months ago
I think the ranked Pac teams have about the same chance of wining the championship with the exception of UCLA. UCLA has to way outperform last year to have a chance. USC is slightly higher due to their unique ability to attract transfers of a high level. Utah also is slightly higher due to their recent success over a couple of years. Oregon is…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic 2023 strongest position group in the forum Football 1 year, 6 months ago
If we develop a dominating LT, the OL could be that group. The DL also has guys to potentially fill out the 2 deep roster with starter quality. Both require expectations to round out in fall camp but the potential is there for our lines to be very good. If so, all the other groups will have more production.

Charlie replied to the topic Long winded thoughts on 2023 in the forum Football 1 year, 6 months ago
I agree, Rising’s health will impact every game but Weber St. We need him at his highest level but that most comes into play in the USC, Oregon, Washington stretch. That then makes QB2 important. A home run would give us a QB that comes on as well as Rising did in ’21. Any QB2 would be a mystery to Florida, Baylor would get a heads up, for Weber…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Football question of the day in the forum Football 1 year, 6 months ago
Errol Tucker is the only college football player I know of who’s play demanded the creation of a new All-American position, kick returner, because of how he impacted football games? I remember games at Utah where the crowd came most alive, much louder by far, every time the other team kicked the ball. Long returns were almost completely…[Read more]
