Often Utah collects some of the best recruits late in the process. We know there are some top teams that simply pick before us and there are great pieces that drop into our tier. CB is a good example in recent cycles. Next the portal has really changed things. Evaluating recruiting this early, even after the first signing date, is not useful.…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Many people are suggesting that USC will blow us out. in the forum Football 2 years, 1 month ago
Going into the Oregon game I also thought Utah needed to pass often to beat Oregon and wanted more passing. Then I watched Oregon State, the team built most like us, take Oregon apart using the run only throughout the last three drives. Clearly, our coaches and Oregon State saw a path to beat Oregon running the ball. Now with what we have…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic I heard Bill talking about whether you play a Nate Johnson package in this game in the forum Football 2 years, 1 month ago
I agree. Most likely our QB will not start here for more than 2 years, a third year is coverage for injury and such. A third year may also happen if missing some games pushes a QB out to an undrafted FA but another year is likely to change draft status. Nate will be good and 3 more years will be adequate. Possibly, there may be thinking that…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Things that are to our advantage this Friday in the forum Football 2 years, 1 month ago
I would give an edge to USC’s offense and an edge to Utah’s defense. Who is healthy will have a lot to do with which edge will be the greatest. TOs will cut into each edge. Utah will not be the favorite and the media favorite which is the best place for us to be. Rising has to be comfortable running and Kincaid active for our chances to be reasonable.

Charlie replied to the topic Chance for back to back Rose Bowl games was all I hoped for this season in the forum Football 2 years, 1 month ago
A loss in the CCG may not kick us out of the Rose Bowl. If it is a close game that is highly rated that is a big plus for Utah. The Rose Bowl very much want’s a team that will run with OSU and keep viewers. Washington has only played in a single big game this year, Utah will have played in 3. Assuming ranked teams. Utah could be considered…[Read more]

1990 Why would we expect to beat the Y very often?
1998 Why would we expect to win the MWC championship?
2004 Why would we expect to ever have the BCS let us in?
2008 Why would we expect to beat Alabama?
2010 Why would we expect to ever get into the Pac 10?
2021 Why would we expect to go to the Rose Bowl?
Why would we expect any more break…[Read more] -

We may need to shake loose of the plans we had in the days of the BCS. Then we needed to go undefeated to be noticed in the rankings. No longer the case. Currently, outside of half a dozen blue-chip teams a P5 team goes undefeated once a half a decade. In the Pac, finishing ranked most years, playing in the CCG often, and consistently…[Read more]

First, fans on game day know little about the team. Those that go to practice every day know infinitely more. What is working currently may or may not have anything to do with what was working a game or two ago. A player’s readiness does not have much at all to do about his direct answer when asked about how he doing. What works against team A…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Utah-Oregon Jerseys in the forum Football 2 years, 1 month ago
I am fine with what the players go with. It would be interesting if Oregon allowed Utah to go with red and skip the white with both teams wearing their colors, which is usually reserved for a rivalry game.

Rising, I think, is talking about his goals. A very reasonable goal would be to take a shot after 5 years of college. He should be working on that goal and may possibly evaluate after the big games coming up. He may also feel he will progress better as a high profile college starter than as a NFL rookie fighting to stay on a squad. I am happy…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Massey's algorithm still likes Utah over Oregon by a slim margin in the forum Football 2 years, 2 months ago
Other than Georgia, Oregon has played 1 game, UCLA, against a decent team. WSU looked very much equal to them. They will not play a top half team on the road until OSU. Oregon may be a top 10 team but we sure have not learned that yet. Their next 3 games make up the best part of their schedule. They play their toughest opponents at home which…[Read more]

Need more information to evaluate. Is this a chance to occupy the unused scholarship for a year? Does this round out the scout team given a 8 or 9 man rotation? There are others ahead of him at SG and Wing. Will he occupy a spot that could be used in next years recruiting?

Charlie replied to the topic Overlooking Stanford – New Poll in the forum Football 2 years, 2 months ago
As has been noted, if Rising is out of his brace and can run, and if TT returns to late 2021 form (last Saturday was encouraging), and if Kincaid is playing and making catches – I very much like our chances. We have had several very good teams in the Pac the last few years but none have gone thru the conference undefeated. Oregon is not better…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Brandon Carlson says he definitely thinks the team will be better this year in the forum Basketball (Men) 2 years, 2 months ago
They will be better, don’t know how far they will climb in the conference standings. Carlson is the only center in the 15 member first and second team preseason all conference teams. I like his backup Keita. They both run the floor quite well. We did not see Anthony who is key to the team. We have not seen Tarlac to see if he will figure in…[Read more]

A player can have a better experience in a different scheme with team strength not a factor. Next, two teams may appear to be the same to someone that does not go to practice but very different to someone that does. The personal fit can sometimes be the greatest factor and could be difficult to assess before you arrive. Last, often people put…[Read more]

Charlie replied to the topic Quinton Ganther has created a nasty RB room. in the forum Football 2 years, 2 months ago
I agree, QC is doing an awesome job. Whitt has always been able to design a strict step by step to give a player a path back that is almost always successful. The next RBs up are showing a lot of promise. However, currently we do not have a RB at the level of TT or Pledger at the end of last year. TT and Bernard might get there by Oregon and…[Read more]

Smith had to start from a record rock bottom with no time. Now he needs to overcome the memory of the first year. But myself, I feel they are running plays and making adjustments better than any coach since Rick. They have better chemistry than since I don’t know when. I like coach Smith. Last year he had such a talent deficit that it was…[Read more]
