I agree. I have watched a lot of kids in HS and Little League football move thru a season with ups and downs. It was tough for them to lose games, get pushed around, get hurt, and hear smack. Undefeated season were simply rare. It was always awesome to see kids come back from adversity and win again. It seems all the best seasons even state…[Read more]

  • Charlie replied to the topic Adjustments, or not in the forum Football 4 months ago

Adjustments are quite limited with a true freshman QB and a short play book. I think the game plan was too much like what would be expected with Rising. With a freshman QB we need to expect the defense to come after him until we punish a defense out of position. We needed more screens, quick 2 second routes, and roll outs to access the spots think…[Read more]

  • Charlie replied to the topic 10 points at home wtf in the forum Football 4 months ago

I agree. We have seen so many great QBs that did not see time as a freshman. I think they lack a wide enough range of plays that make them too predictable. It takes time to know the number of plays that allow each week’s plan to be different enough. There is a limit to the number of plays that can be mastered per week so we see too many plays…[Read more]

  • Goodness. Would we really want to stack guess on top of guess, week after week rather than trust the coaches? I trust the coaches to ride with the situation open if there is a good chance for change. I trust the coaches to manage practice well while they prepare for Saturday. I feel the coaches can measure the value of rest vs the value of a…[Read more]

  • I agree. An old Rick Majerus trick that worked so well in BB, take away the main player and make others beat you. McMillan can be contained with bumps at the line and hand off, deep and short double, and safety coming late all mixed in with base defense looks to give Fifita something to think about. Scalley will mix in some thing to contain or…[Read more]

I would guess it is not al all that simple. Each week changes as Singer gets deeper into the offense. Opponents, defense game plan, score, time on clock, there are so many factors that feed into the next few play calls for me to isolate the factor of the two QBs. Above all I think in the short term the coaches take most what the defense gives.

  • Charlie replied to the topic Am I out of touch? in the forum Football 4 months ago

I would guess it is because it is much more now a business with real impacts back to coaches that need to win. Being open with insights does not get rewarded, wining gets rewarded. Understanding how they played situations last week give insight about how they will likely play them coming up. Sometimes bump or cushion has many factors like score,…[Read more]

Isn’t there a broadcasting / journalism department at the U? If I had the money to donate, I would love to see a station and website run by students in this field that conduct interviews and write articles about Utah sports only. I am with you, it is easy to find info about TDS or any of our opponents. I wish it was equally easy to turn it off…[Read more]

  • Charlie replied to the topic More NIL Fallout in the forum Football 4 months, 1 week ago

I am thinking about how NIL works. Is it mostly 3rd parties not the school that make promises? I am thinking the school helps a bit bring parties together but at the end of the day each player is marketing themselves and bearing the risk of follow thru. I don’t know if UNLV can make a third party come thru. I suppose each NIL deal is different in…[Read more]

Yes. Beat Kansas but the other two should be easy wins.

  • I will call it out when Whitt acts up, it just doesn’t happen often at all. He disagrees, he questions, but I think he is a good example for the lower level coaches as to how to question but let the refs do their job. But this is just me, I dislike coaches and younger players repeating hissy fits they see on TV.

However, to your point, I do think…[Read more]

  • Charlie replied to the topic Under Center in the forum Football 4 months, 1 week ago

Actually makes sense. In practice they will not run the same play both ways. They get the flow down and don’t change for any given play. A shotgun snap is much more friendly to hurt fingers.

  • I would advocate for coaching with class. The problem is HS and little league coaches watch to imitate, but at those levels it gets much more difficult to control. That act at HS is a joke but at little league it becomes so destructive. I feel the more you are paid you should have much more class that those that are paid little or volunteer.…[Read more]

  • Charlie replied to the topic Whitt's presser notes in the forum Football 4 months, 1 week ago

Who knows. I had surgery on August 30. Stiches dissolved but still have a scab. Not in my 20s and not gripping anything. I suppose he needs his cut to heal enough to not pull open again. I have no idea how much taping helps.

I think we have enough on offense with either QB to get past Az., I think the key task this weekend falls to the defense.

  • Hopefully we don’t have anyone put up 22 on us. I think we don’t see a threat in the 20s but only a few times with UCF likely the biggest threat. The TDS offense will not get 21 on us. Still, this offense should put up 35+ with healthy Rising. The Big 12 does have some offenses that will put up numbers. Kansas State and OSU will likely have 21+…[Read more]

  • The reason you see the bend but not break or prevent defense is because it is a better response to the desperate offense calls that throw caution to the wind. You might also ask why not play a desperate offense from the beginning of the game. The answer to why for both is coaches know what is best most of the time. In either case either strategy…[Read more]

  • Actually, accumulation is a real thing to me and many I know. Lots of back and forth to Tucson for grad school and Houston working in energy from SLC showed me that. Accumulation does not happen in 4 days, maybe 10 days will take it down from killing you to just hating it. The immediate step is to avoid talking about it in a negative way and try…[Read more]

  • I am quite a way away from expecting OSU to be scoring on most drives. Too often Utah plays down in a conservative way to the opposition. Doesn’t Utah’s defense play better in bigger games?

  • Did Whitt say it is minor or did he say it was not as bad as first appeared? One thing I do know is coaches do not want to be accountable to something they said a few days ago when getting ready for a game. The last two practices have more to do with who to expect than what fans hope for or what coaches expected at the beginning of the week. The…[Read more]

  • Charlie replied to the topic Alford and McClain in the forum Football 4 months, 2 weeks ago

The reason would be a long season. Our best chance to get into the playoffs and win a game are a function of healthy depth without much drop-off. Fano and Van stay most healthy with rotation. The next couple of DEs after O’Toole need reps to manage a small drop-off margin. Rotate early and often and only shorten rotations when a game is in doubt.…[Read more]
