  • I agree California needs the US as much as the US needs California. California and the West Coast very much will need to make corrections, especially in education, to gain back their awesome previous advantages.

It may be hard to find the single or key reason for failure because their were several. However, I do agree that California mishandled…[Read more]

  • The Big 12 and B1G now have more inventory, however, the Pac 12 inventory disappeared. I think it will be a wash.

  • I agree. The Pac 12 always had about 3 teams with a better defense than the best in the Big 12. Usually included OSU, Oregon, and Wash. The Big 12 has had better offenses top to bottom than the Pac 12 however the best Pac 12 offenses kept pace with the best Big 12 even running against better defenses for the most part.

Utah and Whitt has always…[Read more]

  • I was trying to remember, was it last year or the year before that Bernard was on a pitch count. Either way, he is clearly our most versatile back but it would be a new development if he is healthy to be an every down back. One reason he may come close is he is awesome at blocking and picking up a blitz in protection.

  • I also have a good relationship with every Y fan I know.

I began my career, ’79, working downtown SLC for an engineering firm. At that time, even in SLC, there were at least a dozen Y fans for every Ute fan at work. I have no idea why other than dominance in FB over the 70s. Y fans did not hate us, they simply did not care. That same firm matched…[Read more]

  • I also think the split can slip to 60/40 as the offense opens up. I think Whitt may play a bit more loose with the change of conference. So many more coaches he does not have history with and so few years to worry about later payback. But as Whitt begins to sunset his goals have changed from bowl games and conference championships to deep runs in…[Read more]

  • Yassmin had the advantage of multiple years to learn football which, in his case, was needed. Lohner, as has been confirmed, has incredible athleticism. I expect that he will be able to learn several sets at a time and can be used at the goal line. I expect his key will be how fast he adjusts to and accepts football level contact. I am encouraged,…[Read more]

Kyle and Fred before him, were early adopters of deeper rotations on the D Line. I trust the coaches to take full advantage of deeper talent and rotate the DL and be fresher and stronger than opponents late in the games and late in the year. It also increases preparation for opponent OL personnel. Each of their guys get several of our guys.

Skills are one puzzle piece, coaching is another. Sometimes they fit together and things happen. Sometimes one piece does not fit with the other and not much happens. If we are lucky the fit is there. I do trust the DB coaches to make the best fit with the players they have.

My experience tells me not to make too much of last year. The reason is due to what happened to the QB position. Unlike really no other position in FB, when the QB becomes a weak point every position on the offense sufferers. I really don’t know what spot or which players will take off just because a good QB that makes the opponent defend the…[Read more]

  • I am old school. Going back to the 60s UofA was always clearly the biggest BB rival from a competition perspective. Same was ASU for FB. The Y is more of an emotional rival often with little relationship to sports. The teams that are in the way of a championship in years that we are competitive in that sport should be the rival and can change over time.

  • Charlie replied to the topic Media Guide in the forum Football 4 months, 2 weeks ago

Never mind. The media guide does not have player profiles or depth chart and skimpy position group previews as did previous years.

Goodness, the annual media guide is finally out on utahutes.com. Most years this is ready to go in June. At one time they would simply mail a hardcopy if you called and requested. Nice to see.

I don’t think it (last year’s passing game) need to stay that way. Rising can make it go. He either goes in the first half of the draft of considers another year. Behind him are good options to replace him in 25 and I believe it will be a long time before Utah gets shorthanded at QB because last year left a mark. Utah has little issue missing a…[Read more]

I also am hopeful related to Mitchell thinking he may be the best shot at a short yardage back. Is there any reason he didn’t play last year other than to develop and rake a RS year? I would have liked to see him force his way on in a few games.

  • Looking at Oregon, I assume donations are not included.

  • The stronger QB room will open up the offense while making every other offensive group look greatly improved. The first offensive football fundamental, man on man or as a unit, is to appear to do one thing but quickly doing something else. The second is the ability to move to another option quickly when the defense is positioned with an advantage…[Read more]

  • There is an interesting article about the U vs Y rivalry noting decade by decade wins by each. Of the 11 decades, Utah had more wins in 8, tied in the 90s, and the Y had more wins in the 70s and 80s. The U has had 4 nine win decades, the Y one. Other than the 80s and 90s Utah has had an upper hand. LaVell Edwards did have our number until McBride…[Read more]

  • Utes in the top 10 requires 8 or 9 picks.

  • I think this is exactly right. The eventual super league formed by the B1G and SEC will clearly need more teams from the west than the current 4 even while being heavy from the east. There are simply too many advantages and more money to be had by including more than the 4 as opposed to additional eastern markets. Leaving the 4 schools that will…[Read more]
