Chilly replied to the topic Game Day!! Utah Women’s Basketball v Cincinnati tonight in the forum Basketball (Women) 3 years ago
Another solid test for the Utes, they beat us in a close game in our last meeting (2019). Cincinnati is 2-1 on the season and has some athletes that will challenge Utah inside. Their leading scorer is a do-everything guard. They’re not a great shooting team and will probably be looking to attack the basket. This would be a nice win for us if…[Read more]

The Utes now have 10 players averaging at least 6 ppg. They are leading the nation in scoring offense amongst teams that have played multiple games, averaging 101 points per game. Fun.

They have looked much improved compared to last year in their first two games, scoring over 100 points both games and shooting over 40% on threes. Turnovers down significantly, improved defense and really moving the ball on offense, shooters everywhere. I don’t think they’ll likely challenge for the Pac-12 title, but they’re really fun to watch…[Read more]

Chilly replied to the topic Utah WBALL handling Lipscomb in the forum Basketball (Women) 3 years ago
A few observations from the game:
– For comparison purposes, Lipscomb lost to BYU by 25 Tuesday and we beat them by 49.
– Utah was without Peyton McFarland and Kemery Martin, two players who started for them last year. Both were at the game in street clothes, no crutches or casts so hopefully they will be back soon.
– This team can really…[Read more] -

Kemery was the team’s second leading scorer last year and definitely improved quite a bit from her true freshman year. Recently, she was one of our two player representatives at the PAC-12 media day. I don’t know her personally but she always seems to be smiling.

In women’s basketball, the US is at least as dominant internationally as the US men have ever been. If you watch a US vs. a small third world country, you’re likely to see a 80-100 point victory and it’s not very fun to watch.

Chilly replied to the topic WBB: 2022 Recruiting Update in the forum Basketball (Women) 3 years ago
First, the Pac-12 is incredibly tough – Arizona and Stanford played for the national championship last year. Stanford, Oregon and UCLA are in the top tier, with Arizona and Oregon State right behind. After those five, I think any team can beat anyone. The team had been gradually moving up the standings towards the middle of the Pac-12 until…[Read more]

I thought I’d post an update related to the WBB team’s commits for the 2022 class. According to social media and various websites, the Utes currently have commits from three players in the class. Comments are my own from very limited viewing:
Teya Sidberry (committed 9/2/21) – 6’1″ W from Salt Lake City, UT. Versatile player who can play…[Read more]

Chilly replied to the topic Utah Basketball schedule released in the forum Basketball (Women) 3 years, 1 month ago
The non-conference schedule will be interesting, a bunch of those games where you say “we should win but definitely could lose as well”. Pac-12 is absolutely loaded again so hopefully the team gets rolling before that starts.

Chilly replied to the topic alliance now public. handshake agreement in the forum Football 3 years, 2 months ago
I wish they could the Pac-12 could figure out a way to improve the Pac-12 Network (and the relatively limited revenue that comes with it) as part of this alliance, rather than limping along until the current deal expires in 2024. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like that is part of the discussion currently.

I generally agree with you that it doesn’t really sound like it would work but also figure that we are probably not the first university who has done this, so they likely know a lot more about it than we do. Obviously let’s hope it works, and that it generates a lot of $$$ for the athletic department. I could see the appeal for events at least.…[Read more]

Chilly replied to the topic B1G raiding Pac-12 rumors in the forum Football 3 years, 3 months ago
The Pac-12 Network and the relative lack of meaningful revenue from it is the #1, #2 and #3 reason that the Pac-12 is never playing from a position of power in these sorts of discussions. Obviously that was the reason for our new commissioner, but the conference needs to figure out a solution yesterday.

Chilly replied to the topic PAC12 dominates women's basketball in the forum Basketball (Women) 3 years, 7 months ago
With limited, if any, non-conference schedules, it was difficult this year to have a good grasp of relative strength of the various conferences, so it was good to see the Pac-12 with such a strong showing in the tournament. South Carolina and UConn will both be even more loaded next year but I think the Pac-12 will continue to be the best…[Read more]

Interesting season so far. Teams have been extending their defenses in order to keep us from killing them from three. We’ve gotten better the last couple games at attacking the basket when they do that, but have simply had too many turnovers. Freshman Peyton McFarland has started the last two games at the 5 spot. She is clearly a little raw…[Read more]

Am I correct in my understanding that Fillinger and Carlton will be able to count this season as a red-shirt year due to the fact that they have only played in a few games?

This will be an interesting game to see where we’re at. The top tier of the Pac-12 looks to be Stanford, Oregon, Arizona and UCLA, all of whom where ranked in the top 11 in the country in the most recent poll. Hopefully we can battle for that second tier with Oregon St, ASU and ???. However, to do that, we need to win games like this one vs.…[Read more]

While our Utes should clearly be favored to win this game, Montana State is not a bad team. Coach Binford has been there quite a while, they’ve recruited consistently and the team is well coached – they are one of the top teams in the Big Sky conference. They lost 58-72 to BYU yesterday and BYU hit 14 threes in that game. Let’s hope we play…[Read more]

This was a really nice win for the squad. They had a tough first game against Oregon two days prior and looked much more comfortable in game 2. I think we saw a glimpse of what this team can be, with much more depth than they’ve had in the recent past and a lot of shooters. Brynna Maxwell was unstoppable in the second half. It also was really…[Read more]
