2008 National Champ replied to the topic Complete failure of HS running back recruiting in the forum Football 3 months, 1 week ago
I lived in Kansas for a few years and worked with the “other” all-state RB Sander’s senior year. They were both on the Kansas team for the Kansas-Oklahoma all star game and he showed me the tape once. HS, College and even the pros he did the exact same things and made everyone else on the field look like amateurs. In my prime I don’t think I…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Isaac Wilson vs. Sam Huard not considering Brandon Rose (just a feeling) in the forum Football 3 months, 1 week ago
Whitt’s most successful QB recruits have all ended up at other positions. Off the top of my head: DeVonte Christopher, Chase Hansen, Britain Covey (technically), Brian Blechen but I know I’m missing a couple.
Nate Johnson could get himself into the league if he’d switch to receiver. JaQuinden was never the QB people wanted him to be and…[Read more]

For the kids who do the camps circuits, I think the ranking “experts” can do a pretty good job because they are actually comparing kids side by side. i.e. based on what I’ve seen so far from Wilson, low 4-star seems like they nailed his ranking. strong arm, good mobility but also some accuracy issues and he seems smaller than listed. If I’d been…[Read more]

For me, the best attribute a HS RB can have is the ability to avoid contact. Any truly talented RB can shrug off HS tacklers but kids whose whole game is based on running through someone don’t tend to go very far when they have to move up to defenders with equal skill.
But show me a mini Barry Sanders who never allows anyone to get a clean shot…[Read more]

He would have first been eligible for the draft after the 2022 season. If his promise showed out to be Booker level, he’d have been gone then. If he was still on the team long enough to finish out his eligibility we’d probably be calling him Khalil Tate jr. Incredible introduction that couldn’t be sustained

John White IV was also a transfer so you can go back to the beginning of P5 play. Probably even farther. Didn’t Matt Asiata go JC first?

The other part of recruiting rankings is they don’t look at what is around the player being evaluated. Tuttle is a perfect example since he got to throw to a 1st round pick (Olave). They were both rated 4 stars but if you did a look back ranking, Olave should have been a 5 star catching passes from a 3 star.
Huard was in an air raid system, had…[Read more]

wrong Huard. Brock is the uncle, Damon is Sam’s dad. And both made it to the league which I value more than whether they come up with enough snappy comments to fill a 3.5 hour broadcast window.

2008 National Champ replied to the topic What's your favorite Cam Rising moment or game? in the forum Football 3 months, 1 week ago
Yeah, I don’t know how you pick just one moment. For a guy who doesn’t “look” like a QB, and doesn’t have one defining skill that sets him apart, the entirety of his career has been one where he’s exceeded expectations. In that, he is the epitomy of Utah football.
When he’s all padded up, he looks like an undersized nose tackle. He’s got that…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic Swan ready for DC? in the forum Football 3 months, 1 week ago
I know I’ve said that he doesn’t seem to want a different job but I’ve never seen anything official one way or another. He certainly hasn’t acted like he wants advancement as I’ve also never heard about him interviewing elsewhere.
He and Scalley could have a handshake agreement that he moves up to DC when Scalley moves up but if they do it…[Read more]

At this point, I wouldn’t take Whitt’s opinion on scrambled eggs v. sunny side up with any amount of credibility.
Was it before OSU that he said one QB would take all the snaps one day and the other the next? Maybe it was Arizona. Either way, that stood out as weird at the time. If both QB’s are feeding from the same trough, swapping them out…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic I don’t feel bad for Cam in the forum Football 3 months, 1 week ago
Yeah, that’s a hard one that we all deal with. If I had made ___ decision differently.,, The reality though is that we make the decisions we truly wanted to in most occasions so it’s not the decision that would have to change but the mindset of the person making the decision. Because I’m pretty sure that Rising would still try to come back…[Read more]

2008 National Champ replied to the topic What’s crazy is that (I think) Cam could play 2 more years in the forum Football 3 months, 1 week ago
If he wants to go elsewhere and continue his career I fully support it. But he can’t hold the Utah program hostage anymore, even if he is the best option when he’s at the top of his game because there is no guarantee that he can reach that level again.
It is in everyone’s best interest that he get healthy and moves on with his life however he…[Read more]

Another example of coaches outcoaching themselves? from Bernard’s Interview
It also came to light that during this period of not knowing who would start the team would be learning multiple game plans depending on who was at the helm of the offense.
“But now, we ain’t got to worry about that, because we know the game plan fully and what we’re…[Read more]

I feel bad for him because I don’t wish injury on anyone. But Rising wasn’t going to play for free when the market dictates that starting QB’s at P4 schools start at a million per.
No one forced Rising to take any NIL. If he truly wanted to play for free, he would have. And if this was 2018 rules, he would have played for free. But not…[Read more]

I think the point is that pairing a healthy Jackson with a healthy Bernard would have solved a lot of the short yardage and driving finishing issues the team has struggled with, no matter who was the QB. It’s only speculation but it wouldn’t take much to provide more than Stanley/Mitchell/Vincent have.

yeppers. I just need to get you to come around on the true benefit of unbridled capitalism and my work will be done. It’s a shame it took the last 3 weeks of Utah football to get us to this point. hee-hee

wait, you didn’t think Rising was a legitimate threat to catch the ball on that play? surely you cannot be suggesting that he was just going to stand there and be anything more than a decoy. because I was sold that the intent was for him to make a diving play in the corner of the end zone. unfortunately, ASU sniffed it out and Kuithe had to…[Read more]

“… in space”. get the ball to the playmakers in space!
What did Ohio State do in the 2021 Rose Bowl? They ran 2 receivers deep, another on an 18 yard in and their best receiver Smith-whatever on an 8-12 yard drag route. Granted, Utah pass rush was stymied all game but you ended up with 4 legitimate options every play and DB’s can’t cover…[Read more]

Bad offense (#82 scoring, #58 ypg) v Bad defense (#104 scoring, #42 ypg). Optimist says Bad offense will take advantage of bad defense. Pessimist says both will perform better than norm but still be on the bad side. Wager accordingly
