I threw together a scraper and crawled the post history to preserve it as a precaution. Over 1.8 million posts. The site needs a complete re-write. 15-year-old PHP spaghetti code is no fun to maintain.

I know there is a effort by his family to get UF.N back up and running. They have a family friend working with Xmission to access the hosting account. They seem to want to preserve it. There was a post on Chris’s facebook wall about it, but his profile has been taking down since.

I am very sorry to hear of Chris’s passing. I met him a couple of times a few years back and my interactions with him were always positive. I wish we could get the message out on UFN but it is in a non-functional state currently. I’d be glad to offer my technical help with UFN to get it working again or to post an announcement.

I am pretty sure he has a co-located box at Xmission, I know he used to at least. He did a fund drive years ago for a new server and I doubt he’s upgraded since then. I think it’s more plausible than a neighbor or stranger doing it because he’s a BYU fan. Catching the fire at 4AM and with only 1/2 of the wreath burning and only getting a little soot on the door is too unlikely for me to believe it. He would have had to be the one that set it or standing next to the one who did IMO.

This story smells like bullshit. So he just happened to be awake at 4 AM and was able to put out the burning wreath before it did any damage to the house other than a barely scorched door? I don’t believe somebody would attempt arson just because he’s a cooter fan. This guy did it himself for the attention.

IIRC UFN is on a dedicated box co-located at Xmission. I’m guessing the hosting is still on since the server is responding. Most likely shit’s just broken and neglected or possibly been rooted by Chinese hackers. I wish Monkey would let somebody else have it who has the time and expertise to tend to it, since he doesn’t seem to.
