Agreed. I think (read: hope) we’ll be fine. But yes, it’s waaaaay too soon to be frustrated or bummed about the kinds of guys CS is losing vs bringing in. Like was said above, it looks like we were going to lose Micky, Timmy, and Plummer no matter what. And the second we changed coaches Ian was likely out the door. I’m actually stoked that we…[Read more]

FountainofUte replied to the topic Let’s not get so myopic about the MBB HC situation in the forum Basketball (Men) 3 years, 11 months ago
Agreed.
I will say, the public-ness of the AJ interview made me think it was a done deal. Maybe it was closer than we think, because if it’s just an easy “no” that can be handled over the phone w/o an on-campus interview.
With that said, who the heck was Rick Majerus? Who the heck was Ray Giacoletti or Jim Boylen? We knew who Larry was with his…[Read more]

FountainofUte replied to the topic Alex Jensen recruiting pitch: in the forum Basketball (Men) 3 years, 11 months ago
I’m with you. I’m not as nervous as some about his lack of HC experience. When someone has “it” things will be fine, and AJ has “it.” I think someone like Moser might hit the ground faster in some ways, but I think AJ is actually the better bet the longer he’s here. I think he has more to offer than many guys like Moser, Smith, and Pope.

I get that he’s not the nationally sexy hire, and maybe a controversial local hire with folks skeptical about his HC inexperience, but he may just be exactly the right guy. And he doesn’t want it, no worries. I don’t blame him if the NBA is where he wants to stay. Totally undertandable.

FountainofUte started the topic Random coaching search musings in the forum Basketball (Men) 3 years, 11 months ago
Some things on my mind now that we’re a couple full days into our search:
It’s interesting to hear others in the PAC-12 media and fans of other teams talk about Utah. Many are dismissive and give off that Larry Scott-ish “You’re lucky with what you get” vibe saying the Utah HC gig is like 9th best in the conference. On the other hand, we fans l…[Read more]

FountainofUte replied to the topic Honest question concerning Coach K in the forum Basketball (Men) 3 years, 11 months ago
I guess I’d put myself in the “supporter” camp — only because I know I’m not in the “100% fire” camp. Here’s what my ledger looks like:
The Good:
– I do think he’s a good, honest guy with a strong work ethic
– He runs a clean program, gets kids to class and graduates the ones who stay
– I think he’s a long term guy if things make sense for both s…[Read more] -
FountainofUte replied to the topic When will the Utes be blessed with a 5 star? in the forum Football 4 years, 1 month ago
When he grows up a crazy hard-core Ute fan and the worldwide communication grid is down so that he’s unaware of any programs outside of the Beehive state. So in other words “we” need to create him and then start the apocalypse. Get busy, folks!
Kidding aside, I expect no 5 stars unless it’s a freak circumstance. It really would have to be a…[Read more]

FountainofUte replied to the topic IMO Utah's basketball program is in a dire situation in the forum Basketball (Men) 4 years, 1 month ago
You’re both kind of alluding to this, but I think it’s FAR more important that we get the right person in than that we get LK out. By that I mean, yes, if we can get the home run hire this spring, we do it, but if Harlen isn’t liking what he’s seeing as he sniffs around, better to hold on to LK for another year rather than settle for second best…[Read more]

FountainofUte replied to the topic Alabama is in a league of their own in the forum Football 4 years, 1 month ago
I’ll admit, I don’t understand “the regular season matters” and why an inclusive playoff would ruin that.
The truth is, before any FBS team kicks off its first game in late August, half of the field is already eliminated from the playoff. There are about 120 teams. And no G5 will EVER make the playoff, so a G5 will never win the championship of…[Read more]

Is it possible that the coaches are adjusting, but the players aren’t correctly making the adjustments as coached? Either through inexperience or inability?

FountainofUte replied to the topic Who was Utah's greatest basketball player? in the forum Basketball (Men) 4 years, 2 months ago
McGill was before my time so I just have to leave it to his records and witnesses to account for it. But there’s something about Bogut doing ALL that he did by his SOPHOMORE year. His ceiling as a four-year player would have been ridiculous and would have made him clearly the best we’ve ever had. He’s arguably there with only two seasons under his…[Read more]

FountainofUte replied to the topic PAC12 buying out Scott early? in the forum Football 4 years, 8 months ago
I’m sure there are lots of good candidates out there, but my Ute goggles tell me that Chris Hill would do a great job, at least as a transitional guy while the PAC tries to get their crap together again.
But besides the fact that retirement is treating him well (I assume), I’m guessing the old guard in the conference want one of “their guys” not…[Read more]

FountainofUte replied to the topic Excited to see this kid in the Hunstman Center in the forum Basketball (Men) 5 years ago
I’m wondering if Matt Van Komen will stay, or why he would. I was real intrigued by his signing with Utah, but if he won’t redshirt and LK won’t play him, what’s the point?

FountainofUte replied to the topic Is anyone else concerned that we are running Rylan Jones into the ground? in the forum Basketball (Men) 5 years ago
I’m not concerned. I agree that it’s not ideal, but to me, this season is a groundwork for the next couple of seasons. If we wear him out this season he’ll be fine and better for it next year. I’m not worried that overusse this year will have any negative carryover on his future career at the U. Could he wear out this year? Very possibly. But oh…[Read more]

This game has my attention. I chalked it up to a loss before the season started. Now, not so sure. I think we can win this.

FountainofUte replied to the topic USC with a ton of injuries. in the forum Football 5 years, 4 months ago
USC is like the Hydra. They lose one blue-chipper and two more step up in their place. Our loss down there last month once again articulated the fact that they just live in a completely different reality than we do as far as recruiting. Man, I wish we had that game back. Heck, just a couple plays back.
I’m developing my own unique distaste for…[Read more]

FountainofUte replied to the topic Covey Red Shirt in the forum Football 5 years, 5 months ago
Nah, redshirting would be a bad idea. It’s not like he’s completely ineffective, just that little spark is gone – maybe for now or maybe for good. Who knows? But as an RM with virtually zero NFL potential, he just needs to get his degree and move on to what will be a successful career no matter what path he chooses. Prolonging his playing career…[Read more]

Ditto. Usually I’d be stoked. And I am, but I don’t have that stoked glow news like this usually brings. I, too, am one of those “Ute hoops first” guys, but lately the weird state of the program (constantly one step forward, one step back) feels like any good news will soon be met with something to offset it.
With that said, this kid looks like…[Read more]

Forgive my ignorance: why two years? Could he not jump to the U after one year if he has a successful freshman year academically?

FountainofUte replied to the topic Jayce in the forum Basketball (Men) 5 years, 9 months ago
For those who say he’s not really been good for us up until now, that’s hard to argue. It’s pretty well a fact. But I agree that from all accounts he worked hard, was a good student and kid, and IMO, this next year he would have been quite the asset. Much like Batchinsky, he would have been a solid, mature, and reliable role player on a team that…[Read more]
