How long has it been since anyone has watched BYU beat Utah soundly on both lines of scrimmage? A damn long time. Both O line and D line were soundly beat last night.
Sure Ludwig and Scalley maybe could have tried for a couple more creative play calls. But coaching isnt going to change much when both of your lines are being beaten so badly.…[Read more] -
GreatNorthernUte replied to the topic How far can our OL and WRs take us in 2019? in the forum Football 5 years, 9 months ago
The issue isnt the starting talent at OL. The issue is depth. Last year was much better than mediocre (Shelley would NOT have won the last 3 games with a mediocre O line). This year one injury could very well make a good group mediocre.
At WR its a bit of both. Dixon and Enis both contributed as freshmen folks. With reasonable coaching we…[Read more]

On the off chance he gets his waiver, unless Rising is absolutely heads and tails better than Huntley in camp, Rising is going to sit.
He has no leverage here. He cant transfer again without having severely limited options. This is not Tuttle redux. He has to be Trevor Lawrence or he sits. Simple as that, and I am sure everyone knows it.

Most important part is no November games. Even for those of us who would rather abandon the rivalry, this is a big win.

I would take 1-2 years of Sark in a heartbeat. It gives us great recruiting momentum going into what should be a good year of results on the field.
Good programs have staff move on all the time. Not at the recent rate of our OCs, but staff turnover should not be automatically perceived as bad. Unfortunately, the recent mismanagement of the OC…[Read more]

Lets all face it: Ludwig might as well be a random nobody hire. He is the Vanderbilt OC where he has done nothing special. He did nothing hugely special at Wisconsin. Or San Diego State. Or Cal. The list goes on. Is he acceptable? I guess. Is he an improvement? No.
What Ludwig does offer is family ties to Utah. So maybe he doesnt leave…[Read more] -

Nailed it.
To this Ill add one thing: good coaching can develop more players to an elite level on average, and bad coaching can develop fewer on average. But coaching doesnt take a bunch of 3-stars and turn them all into 5-star talent on a sustained basis. Period.
One of the annoying side effects of the 2008 Sugar Bowl season has been to…[Read more]

This is best for everyone. He had several chances to grow into the role and couldnt do it. Has nothing to do with the UW fluke. He just sees the writing on the wall with the talent coming up. All the best to him.

The big sports leagues are already experimenting with internet live streaming. The NFL has actually tried a dedicated streaming service in Canada (through a startup called DAZN). It was a bust, mostly because it was plagued with technical streaming quality issues. So we will get there, but not yet.
The biggest reason we wont get there is…[Read more]

GreatNorthernUte replied to the topic How do you level the playing field in college football? in the forum Football 5 years, 10 months ago
Expand the playoff to 8 teams. Saban doesnt want it. SEC doesnt want it. That alone should tell you a lot.
An 8 team playoff with P5 champ auto-bids opens up gives far more programs a realistic playoff sales pitch for recruits.

GreatNorthernUte replied to the topic Utah's 2019 Recruiting in the forum Football 5 years, 10 months ago
If you don’t believe that Utah can ever recruit a class any better than the middle of the conference (so #6), then I say those are pretty low expectations.
Forget the national rankings and focus on the conference. The only teams that we will likely never out-recruit in any given year are USC and Oregon. Just not going to happen. But can Utah…[Read more]

O line depth will be the big issue. Finding 3 new quality starters can maybe be done if we are lucky, but their backups are a different story.
Receivers are a dumpster fire outside of Covey and possibly Dixon. And even these two are both undersized and have the dropsies (IMO these two issues are connected by both being justifiably concerned…[Read more]

GreatNorthernUte replied to the topic Utah’s place inside the PAC12 in the forum Football 5 years, 10 months ago
Because without the rest of the conference being perceived strongly, a 1-loss Pac 12 champ Utah gets stuck with the Rose Bowl a la Ohio State. Or a 2-loss Utah Pac 12 runner up gets WSUd into the Alamo instead of the Fiesta – perception of Pac 12 weakness is absolutely why this happened to WSU. The Fiesta would have been thrilled to have WSU,…[Read more]

Well add me to the list. Fans need to relax. This is a road game in the Pac-12 and the opponent was far from terrible.
On top of that, we’re down Fitts, Lotulelei, Dielman, Patrick for most of the game, CBB, and Fulks (I also suspect something is wrong with Phillips’ kicking leg). Injuries to a team’s top DT, C, DE, and three starting WRs…[Read more]

It’s like our last two drives just never happened. Both were excellent execution with plenty of nice passes.
Apparently, merely not passing makes you a bad team. Funny that David Shaw never got that memo.

GreatNorthernUte replied to the topic Some RB stats in the forum Football 8 years, 2 months ago
Our OL played relatively poorly against SUU. Otherwise, the OL has not played that badly at all.
Most of the time, line play is a war of attrition. If both teams have decent technique and are equally talented, it comes down to who is better coached and conditioned for the late game. The team that is better on this front starts taking over in…[Read more]
