  • Maybe my memory of former Cam is tainted by recent Cam, but Rose looked just as good or better running than Cam ever did. At least, from an athletic perspective. Maybe not on the option reads.

  • From a fan perspective, I don’t think the NIL/Portal system is that much different from recruiting in general.

There are many high school recruits that never even see the field. Most fans probably don’t even follow recruiting all that closely. I actually think that more people are paying attention to portal comings and goings than they ever did…[Read more]

I won’t pretend to know, but most people in this ‘industry’ are looking to advance their careers and get paid more.
Sometimes people bite off more than they can chew, or leave success to find failure (Scott Frost, Brian Harsin, Chip Kelly, etc).
I guess you can’t fault them for shooting their shot. Many people have succeeded following this…[Read more]

  • This. I’ve been impressed with his ability to catch (almost) everything thrown in his direction and wonder why he doesn’t get more targets.

  • I have seen a lot of commentary around here lately with a focus on NIL, ‘last straw’, ‘CFB is ruined’, ‘no longer a fan’, etc.

Is the current model a bit of a downer at the moment? Yes.
Does it seem like the Wild West? Also, yes.

I respect everyone’s right to ‘fan’ how they would like. This is, after all, entertainment.
    If you are not…[Read more]

  • Most likely.

Think of someone like LeBron James. He receives a salary as an employee of the Lakers, but he also gets paid by Nike and others for NIL/promotion/etc.

I’d really like to know why Utah has so many injuries lately, especially quarterbacks.

Some like to blame the turf, but many teams play on turf. Some like to blame Under Armor, but there are other teams that use Under Armor.

Having seen some of the injuries on video, there doesn’t really seem to be anything unusual. Cam Risings latest injury…[Read more]

Urban Meyer is probably the best coach Utah has had (so far 😉), but he didn’t stick around very long.

Kyle Whittingham has been a great coach with some glaring blind spots (offense, fan engagement). I am not in the camp that thinks he should be fired or forced out, but I really wish that he would adapt a little bit more on offense.

    Throughout…[Read more]

  • Yeah, that false start penalty made me wonder why those don’t count as a free play for the defense; kind of like how offside is a free play for the offense.

I wonder what it would be like if they were allowed to continue the play and the defense was allowed to accept/reject the penalty.

  • I can’t bring myself to believe anything like this from Whittingham anymore… The past season and a half have made sure of that.

  • RedRocks replied to the topic Booooooo in the forum Football 2 months ago

Yeah, that is kind of what I was trying to say with part of my previous message. I guess I didn’t do a great job.

  • RedRocks replied to the topic Booooooo in the forum Football 2 months ago

Well, I guess I see that I am in the minority on this topic around here. Fair enough.

If you booed someone pretty much anywhere else in life, you would look pretty dumb. I guess society has decided it is okay in sports (or generally, events with large crowds). I suppose it must be due to our inability to convey more complex communication as a…[Read more]

How to call an offense at Utah:

Step 1) Choose one of the following:
    A) Run up the middle
    B) Throw a pass into coverage near the sideline
    C) Run a trick play that tricks nobody

Step 2) Repeat step 1 until punt or score

Obviously reductive, but I think we can see why TCU (and everyone watching) pretty much knew what Utah was doing.

I dislike hearing fans boo during games. It feels so cringe.

Are we booing the players? The coaches? The play calling? The performance?
I can almost guarantee that the players feel like we are booing them, regardless of intent. Do you really want to play hard for such a crowd?

I understand that we don’t usually want to tell each other how to be…[Read more]

  • RedRocks replied to the topic Blame the quarterback in the forum Football 2 months ago

Yeah, I find myself wondering about this, especially this season.

Seems like when the other team is on offense, their receivers often have a ton of space. This has been true throughout the year. I know the defense has been pretty good at stopping other teams from scoring, but our pass defense has looked pretty bad.

On the other side, why does it…[Read more]

I like your optimism, but not your comparison.

It has become quite clear to me that there is a portion of our fanbase that has become just as bad (or worse) than the portion of the TDS fanbase that we like to ridicule.

All off-season people had to listen to the obnoxious portion of our fanbase gloat about superiority. Then we got to listen to…[Read more]

  • RedRocks replied to the topic Prevent defense play calls in the forum Football 3 months ago

Yeah, I hate the prevent defense.
I understand wanting to limit big plays or whatever, but what is the point when you end up simply allowing the other team to march down the field at will?

However, I think I hate the ‘prevent’ offense Utah seems to run even more.
It is more like the “predictable three and out” offense.

    You’d think I’d be used to…[Read more]

  • RedRocks replied to the topic let’s talk about rising in the forum Football 3 months ago

You don’t play to ‘develop’. You play to win.

You ‘develop’ in practice, in the weight room, and in film study.
If you are destroying the other team, then you put in your backups to ‘develop’.

If a starter is injured, you play the backup (who gets a chance to ‘develop’).
Once the starter is healed, if they give you the best chance to win, you play them.

  • RedRocks replied to the topic let’s talk about rising in the forum Football 3 months ago

🤦‍♂️ What kind of take is this?

Rising is obviously injured, but he is one of the best quarterbacks to have played at Utah. Now you want to bench him for a freshman? Zach has looked good at times, but he has definitely looked like a freshman at other times.

Don’t get me wrong, I too am tired of this will he / won’t he play charade. However,…[Read more]
