Good points proud Ute and MD. One thought I might ad to the mix. Will Whitt and Ludwig utilize the talent we have at RB. We don’t have a JJ or TT on the roster. Spread the field with our fast and elusive RBs. Swing passes screens and off tackle outside runs. Oregon has done it for years with success.

Nice to have another Madsen. Not sure if he fits our getting more athletic theme. Time will tell. Rollie replacement? We need an athletic 2 guard that can defend the perimeter and finish at the rim. We had size and shooters last year but didn’t make the tournament.

Jim Vanderhoof replied to the topic How bad would losing Burgess be? in the forum Basketball (Men) 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Burgess would be a big loss in recruiting. He is well connected with local prospects and can recruit LDS players. The portal can make recruiting not as big of deal. Coaching wise if he’s working with the Utah big men there wasn’t much improvement with Keba and Lovering. They seemed to regress if anything. Replace Burgess with a financial adv…[Read more]

I’d take him. He is a hard nosed physical player that we need. Four years experience. Good rebounder and defensive player. He could play a few minutes at 5. We need to get more athletic at 2,3,4.

Thanks proud Ute for the update. We have an amazing coaching staff. They have created a professional atmosphere for these players. Great players want to get better and be challenged. We just need to stay healthy and we have as good of shot as anyone to get to the playoffs.

Jim Vanderhoof started the topic Recruiting vs portal MBB in the forum Basketball (Men) 6 months, 4 weeks ago
I believe it’s got to be somewhere in the middle. If you can recruit top talent out of high school that can impact the program immediately that would be a priority. Landing a proven junior -senior portal player would be another priority. Now do you fill your roster with recruits that need to develop before they play or portal players who are d…[Read more]

Jim Vanderhoof replied to the topic Coach Smith in the forum Basketball (Men) 7 months ago
I agree Chin. Better defense and rebounding need better athletes. Smith ( smallest player on the court) was our best rebounder. Athleticism matters. Free throw shooting was horrible considering we built the team around shooters.

The zone was not working the second half. They made adjustments we didn’t. They had wide open shots every possession. Why stick with it? I thought our offense was good. It’s obvious we need more athleticism on defense. Keba has disappeared the last several games. If Smith and Madsen stay we need athletes at 2-4-5 positions. Lovering 8-9 th pla…[Read more]

I agree not sure what his motives are. Why is it important that we are disliked by the teams in our conference?

Jim Vanderhoof replied to the topic Official, Rollie to TP in the forum Basketball (Men) 7 months ago
Rollie is a loss for sure. He has experience and can play either guard. I’d take him over Erickson any day. He wants to play point and Smith is just better period. I agree with Miami on Keba. His basketball IQ needs to improve. Too many bad fouls and no face the basket game. If Madsen and Smith stay we need athletes at 2 guard and 4. Lovering is a…[Read more]

Definitely a correlation between football success and basketball decline Miami. Seasons overlap and instead of putting football behind and looking forward to basketball it’s the opposite. Football with the bowl games go into January. Also playing sisters of the poor in the non conference games don’t bring much excitement early.

I won’t argue with your Majerus take. He got the most out of his players. It’s a different era in basketball. The defense is much better. The players are way more athletic and long. This Utah team looks like a Majerus team. Spread the floor pick and roll is the new offensive sets. We have the shooters but who besides Smith can finish at the rim…[Read more]

I respectfully disagree with your talent assessment. After watching four days of tournament play it’s obvious to me we don’t have the athletes to compete. Being tall and being a good shooter isn’t enough anymore. Our only athletic player Smith out rebounds our 2 7 ft guys. Imagine if we had 4 or 5 players of Smiths caliber at 6-5” to 6-8”. I…[Read more]

Coach Smith needs to recruit athletes and develop them. That’s been Whitts mantra for years. We have nothing on the bench to develop. The era of tall slow big men and non athletic shooters is gone. The game has changed. The portal should have plenty to pick from. USU coach brought point guard and center with him from Montana State. Both all c…[Read more]

Jim Vanderhoof replied to the topic If USU can make the final 32 … in the forum Basketball (Men) 7 months, 1 week ago
He brought the best point guard and center in the conference with him from Montana State.USU has lots of athletic players. Watching all the tournament games we would be the least athletic team in the tournament. Athletic guards that can break down the defense is a must. Smith was our only athletic player that handled the ball.

Jim Vanderhoof replied to the topic Changes in Recruiting Strategies in the forum Basketball (Men) 7 months, 1 week ago
We need athletes!! Being tall and slow gets you a couple dunks and rim protection. The offenses that are being run in college bb spread the court and create mismatches. You have to guard on the perimeter and be able to switch the screens. On offense be able to drive and finish at the rim and a couple of shooters. BYU has the same problem and it…[Read more]

I’ve been saying for a couple years that the game has changed and with pick and you need to switch on defense. You need long athletic players than guard all positions. Height doesn’t matter if you can’t guard the perimeter.
