Outstanding discussion. Lots of valid points. Let’s all respect each other’s opinions even if you disagree.”Nobody’s right if everybodys wrong”. Buffalo Springfield would say.
My 2 cents is we have seen the most success over the years with power backs. TT JJ Moss Booker etc. Why recruit smaller running backs that have different styles and expec…[Read more]

I agree red rocks. USC has toughest offense ( besides Washington) to defend. They spread the field and make safeties and dbs tackle in space. Vaki and Bishop are all American type talents along with Barton.
Richie Snowden backup lbs are not the same caliber. Wearing out our best defenders on offense gives them twice the chance of injury or lose…[Read more]

Good point Charlie. It’s amazing how much better the O line becomes with a few completed passes.

Vaki is to valuable on defense. Cal is not USC. USC spreads the field and the defensive backfield has more space to cover. He will get worn out on D. Ludwig surprised Cal but USC will be ready.
With Bishop out the first half we need him to play well. Richie is going to get tested early. He can certainly help on offense which we need but I think…[Read more]

I agree. I thought Parks would be money this year. Plus adding Pittman and Matthews would help.
Parks dropped a couple against OSU and has disappeared. Pittman has been a no show. Only Matthews has stepped up.
I think it’s safe to say we won’t be WR U anytime soon.

USC will spread the field. Bishop and Vaki are key on defense. Much more than against Cal. Bishop is out the first half. That puts more pressure on Vaki.
He was great on offense and was the difference in the run game. Running backs take a beating. Can we afford to have him less than 100% on defense? I’m torn between making offense better or w…[Read more]

Our backs are against the wall. We seem to play better when we are the underdog. Whitt Scalley and Ludwig will have us ready to play.
I think we see a different USC team. They have not forgot last years loss that cost them the CFP. They always have talent but not enough effort. Tough task ahead. We are supposed to lose so the pressure falls on…[Read more]

Good points plainsute. Vaki is a key this week on defense. Especially if Bishop is out. SC will be ready for him on offense. Maybe use him as a decoy for play action.
In the CCG last year the d ends didn’t let Williams get outside. Hold contain. Let the the d line get the push up the middle for pressure. Throw in some blitzes with Barton and R…[Read more]

We need Bishop to start the game. Last year they attacked the perimeter and made our safeties and corners tackle in space. Plus we tried to pressure and sack Williams.
Second game we adjusted to the perimeter and contained Williams. Make him throw from the pocket. He plays much better in scramble mode. When he gets out of the pocket he is dangerous.7

I would say Tuttle. Not only was he bust but possibly cost us Zach Wilson.

Jim Vanderhoof replied to the topic What is the drop dead date for Cam’s return in the forum Football 1 year, 9 months ago
Well said Miami. Cam is the alpha dog. He is the leader and others will follow. Just his presence make us better. Not to mention his knowledge of the playbook.
Receivers and tight ends work harder to get open. The San Diego State game was a prime example. Defense can’t just play the run.
He may not have the greatest arm and running will be l…[Read more]

I think we only lose Broughton on defense. Get Cam and Kuithe the medical year. All but one offensive lineman back. Pick up a couple portal wr’s. Easier league next year and expanded playoff.
Once in a lifetime chance to get to the final four. Whitt retires and I spend the last of my retirement going to playoff games. Almost perfect scenario. U…[Read more]

Nice find Yerg. He has been outstanding! Didn’t know he switched over. He’s a good one. With Snowden and the other freshman cb we are talented and set for awhile

Jim Vanderhoof replied to the topic RB Pass Protection in the forum Football 1 year, 9 months ago
That’s true. Also if the qb can identify the blitz and change the play at the line. A lot to ask of a freshman qb. Same cat and mouse game we’ll do to the Cal freshman qb.
Get the ball to tight end as a safety net. That’s what Cam did last year.

Jim Vanderhoof replied to the topic Sounds like Randle is getting some reps in the forum Football 1 year, 9 months ago
Randle is 6’0 176 lbs. Unless he runs a 4.3-4.4 40 we drop down to 1 yard and a cloud of dust. Seems like we don’t change the offense to spread the field and utilize our speed and lack of size.
Offense is designed for Cam and JJ. Backups have completely different skill sets. Maybe Randle will surprise us. I don’t see NJ and Randle being able…[Read more]

Jim Vanderhoof replied to the topic Cal depth chart in the forum Football 1 year, 9 months ago
Why have a depth chart? Just say everyone is a game time decision !! Even better list Bottari as your starter and Howard as backup. Then Cal would have to prepare for two more QBs to stack the box and blitz.
I’m joking of course but our secrecy about injuries has gone way overboard.
