krindor replied to the topic Transfer portal question in the forum Football 3 years, 2 months ago
Slightly predates the portal (but the idea was basically the same, just not formalized), but Stevie Tu’ikolovatu left our team as a backup DT who wasn’t getting playing time, went to USC, made an all-conference team and was drafted into the NFL.
That’s 2016 though, nothing since 2018 stands out

krindor replied to the topic im inclined to say that grad transfer qbs are just probably not good in the forum Football 3 years, 2 months ago
Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Russell Wilson, Nathan Peterman, Vernon Adams, Gardner Minshew, Ryan Finley plus a couple P5->G5 guys. Besides Adams (who had injury issues) they all did well enough to be drafted.
D’Eriq King is still in progress at Miami, but has done fairly well as a grad transfer

krindor started the topic The most/least (statistically) similar teams to Utah in on-field performance in the forum Football 3 years, 2 months ago
Determined by finding the last decade win% for every P5 team (including the 4 new ones) against 3 different types of P5 opponents; those with 3 or fewer P5 wins, those with 4-6 P5 wins, and those with 7+ P5 wins. And then taking sum of squares of differences to see which is most/least similar.
Most similar
1. UCLA2. Northwestern3. West…[Read more] -
krindor replied to the topic 2010s – BYU's Decade of Irrelevance in the forum Football 3 years, 2 months ago
I actually just did an in-depth statistical analysis, looking at every single P5 game over the last decade in order to rank every P5 team and conference (including the new incoming ones).
Not sure the best way to post a table here, but long story short, BYU ranks #52/69. On the one hand, that’s fairly solid considering they’ve been languishing…[Read more]

Honestly, the BYU/Utah game ratings are surprisingly mediocre.
Utah has had 32 games on national television over the past 4 seasons. Games against BYU rank #11, #22 and #24 in TV viewership.

krindor replied to the topic Rumors online of Baylor, TTech, and TCU reaching out to the PAC this am in the forum Pac-12 3 years, 4 months ago
My guess is that Kansas and Iowa St will make a play to go for the Big 10. Not sure they’ll pull it off, but they are both AAU members. The bigger concern is that with Kansas (AAU member, #21 in total revenue in 2019) in play, the BIG10 might grab them and make a play for Colorado (good history, pacifies Nebraska) which would hurt the PAC12 in a…[Read more]

Agree in general; don’t think it likely happens to the SEC, but the scorched earth could enable the PAC12 to move in.
T Boone Pickens probably has no strong feelings on the matter though, given that he died 2 years ago

krindor replied to the topic FPI in the forum Football 3 years, 4 months ago
It does point out that several teams are perennially underrated by FPI, Utah might be one of those.
For comparison, here’s what preseason FPI suggested for Utah each year and where they ended up
2019 – predicted: 8.6, actual: 11 (https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/caqsyl/updated_preseason_2019_fpi_rankings_1_clemson_2/)

I’m pretty sure the NCAA’s new regulations don’t allow boosters to compensate athletes as “inducement for recruiting purposes.”
The NCAA literally doesn’t have any regulations on this. After the Supreme Court knocked their case out, they don’t want to do anything that looks like a limitation. Right now it’s a patchwork of various state law…[Read more]

krindor replied to the topic Pac-12 Discussing Dropping Down To Eight Conference Games in the forum Football 3 years, 4 months ago
It would be great to have more games against OOC opponents, but it very much depends on whether those are cupcakes or good games. The ideal would be that every conference is held to the same standard.
If that’s 8 conference games, 1 FCS, 1 G5, 2 P5 OOC, that’s fine. If it’s something completely different, that’s fine too.

Honestly, that’s a good thing in my mind. If someone wants to argue that the UAB coordinator is better than Scalley, let them. Means that another team is likely to try to poach that guy instead of Scalley

krindor replied to the topic This seems wrong to me in the forum Football 3 years, 5 months ago
Tuiaki probably shouldn’t be that high, but he’s better than most BYU fans give him credit for. He suffers from the same issue that affected Pau Gasol during his Laker’s career. Nobody wanted to put any blame on Kobe, so whenever something went bad it kind of defaulted to blaming Pau.
For example, BYU scored 3 second-half points on 6 drives…[Read more]

I could definitely see that based off the initial tweet. Coach Bumphis has a WR he likes, guys comes out to Utah, decides a few days later that he’s going to commit. Of course Coach Bump would be excited.
But, to me, that doesn’t square with OnlyU’s “You’re all gonna like this one”. Because we, as fans, are spoiled and don’t get as excited…[Read more]

Demetris Robinson is the only really high-profile WR I can think of in the portal. Could be a recruit, though the timing for that is less likely.

krindor replied to the topic UNLV potential PAC 12 expansion candidate in the forum Football 3 years, 5 months ago
If you’re thinking long-term, UNLV is easily the most appealing. Large (and new) market, high (enough) academics with the Tier 1 thing, good central location for the conference. I’ve been an advocate that UNLV is a potential sleeping giant.
Second option is tougher though, and where I imagine the holdup would be. Taking all the FBS teams out…[Read more]

Living in Atlanta, this absolutely sucks for me.
If I want to watch the Utah/BYU game, it starts at 10:15. The average length of a college football game is 3.5 hours. So that means the game ends at 1:45 AM. And I’ve got to get up no later than 6:30 the next morning to get a quick shower and then have kids up and moving for school.
That’s a…[Read more]
