It blows my mind how this team can be so consistently awful at the end of close games.

“Thank you so much for bringing up such a painful subject. While you’re at it, why don’t you give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it?” Miracle Max

The no call that really got me frustrated was the hit by 25 on Huntley after he released the pass to Dixon (I think). The pass was ruled complete but then correctly overturned. If anyone can explain how the hit on Huntley on that play was not targeting, I’d welcome the insight. The crown of 25’s helmet hits face mask as he’s releasing the pass. Seemed textbook targeting to me.

Perhaps I should rephrase. They are doing more down South than K is doing on the Hill despite the inherent recruiting challenges at the Y. It seems that without those disadvantages, they could be even better.

I think that Oregon’s choking was different. Oregon did not dominate lesser opponents like Utah did. Oregon lost to a mid-tier conference opponent in ASU, while Utah’s loss was a close loss to USC (2nd in the South and 3rd overall in the conference) on the road without the Pac12 Offensive player of the year for most of the game. I can completely understand why the coaches voted for so many Utes—all but Oregon and USC were dominated by Utah much more than they were by Oregon.

While I buy the argument of inexperienced o-lines and QBs for Cal and ASU, Washington State and Oregon State have highly effective passing attacks that we squelched. Not saying that Petersen won’t pull something effective out of the hat, but the fact that Leach couldn’t gives me some comfort.

It’s not so much that Larry K has underperformed on the whole with the talent he has season-by-season. Nor do I have too much gripe with his ability to recruit good talent. Rather, his failure to retain good talent or even solid role players from one season to the next. As a result, he always has the youth and inexperience card to play, and he has not successfully built a program that can be reloaded instead of rebuilt. If Larry K can retain his young core over this offseason, that will go a long way toward addressing my concern. I am not, however, holding my breath.

Any news on Hansen, Blair, or other Utes at the combine?
