Although I agree with your assertion somewhat, Finebaum’s comments are treating Utah like it’s some MWC champion and IS inferior just because the school is Utah. His comments make it clear that, after almost 10 years as a member of a respectable P5 conference with what can be seen as great success given where Utah came from, and also previous recent unmatched success as a G5, Utah still should be an outsider for something other than merit on the field. I understand that he is being paid to promote interests other than those of Utah and the Pac 12 but saying Utah shouldn’t get in for anything other than what’s on the field seems reckless and irresponsible as a media member and an employee of ESPN (who has the broadcast rights to the CFP). His comments go to the very integrity of the entire system, which is already stacked against schools like Utah.

Former 4 star instead of 5 star. Pace not impressed.

Alex is the type of person I would have no issue with being a role model to my children.

My opinion is that, unless you’re getting the high four-star and five-stars, development trumps star rating. That’s not to say that talent isn’t important but I don’t believe a kid who is rated 87 on 247 is materially better than a kid who is rated 85. Good development of the 85 kid would trump any talent discrepency (if any) between him and the 87 kid IMO. Also, many schools seem to offer when certain other schools do which means some kids aren’t even scouted. It’s nice that Utah is getting better average stars in its recruiting class but I can’t imagine they would ever go away from their model as long as Kyle is here. If Utah somehoe gets into the CFP, it would be a huge anomoly when it comes to recruiting as Utah has not even been close to a top 10 class.

Absolutely worth a double post. Can you imagine him, Carlton, and Wegis?

I wouldn’t be so sure about the lower star ranking. The following are guys higher rated than Utah’s average star rating for last year’s class (0.8612 247) who, I believe, have a shot at signing with the Utes:
Xavier Carlton – 0.9004 247 – Good chance IMO
Ramon Henderson – 0.8706 247 – Low chance IMO, just took an OV last weekend
Solatoa Moea’i – 0.8778 247 – Good chance IMO
Nate Ritchie – 0.8714 247 – Used to think good chance but not it’s a little cloudy. If anyone knows anything on Nate, I would be interested to know where he’s leaning.
I’ve also heard that Van Fillinger (0.9037 247 currently committed to Texas) may be starting to consider the Utes. Not sure if I heard that on here or not but I have no inside info on Van.
There are also quite a few guys interested in the Utes whose 247 score is hovering just below last year’s average who may sign such as: Sione Fotu (0.8519 247), Tate Rodemaker (0.8573 247), and Alex Harrison (0.8593) and who may get bumps in star rating before it is all said and done (assuming evaluations for 247 haven’t been completed yet).

Just last year 17 out of the top 25 recruits in the state of Alabama went out of state and Alabama only got five of them and missed on the top two in-state recruits, who went to Georgia. As far as recruiting is concerned, Alabama is the gold standard but the numbers prove that not every kid wants to stay in state even if the in-state schools (Alabama and Auburn) are powerhouses. If Alabama and Auburn can’t keep them in-state then imagine the difficulty Utah must have.

Utah lean from what I hear. Getting to a Rose Bowl or better would possibly put Utah over the top.

Right? Remember when everyone said Utah fans were delusional when we allowed ourselves to get excited when some experts and talking heads were predicting Utah to the CFP? Turns out it wasn’t delusional at all and, unless Utah slips up, was a completely reasonable guess whether Utah makes it or not.
