I’m sorry but your logic about using the NCAA tournament as the measure of how great a conference is has many flaws. Top to bottom the Big 12 is at least in the top 3 of all D1 basketball conferences and it has been for many years. Just using this year’s tournament to support your logic does not make it valid. The NCAA tournament is all about…[Read more]

Exactly. Just because you were a great player does not translate to being a great coach. There are TONS of examples in almost every profession. I think Steve Smith would be an absolute disaster as a coach. His temper alone is a red flag. I don’t think Alex would be up for the near 24-7 commitment that a coach needs to agree to these days.…[Read more]

I look at it as a completely different sport. Kind of like baseball is to softball. When you look at it that way you can appreciate both more easily. Some women’s sports are actually better than men’s IMO. Like tennis (minus the grunting!) and volleyball.

Yes, for sure. It was a great game without a lot of the crap that happened last year. Both sides were guilty of it too. It was also great seeing those two great players come together after the game in sportsmanship.

And our guards and forwards consistently going under screens on outside shooters. The defensive rotation on shooters is also horrible and it was on full display all night last night. Other glaring issues like free throw shooting, rebounding, turnovers, poor in-game adjustments, etc. I hope Coach Smith finds a few guru basketball workshops he…[Read more]

Not sure they are in the same league in terms of popularity or TV eyeballs. The numbers don’t say so. You cannot compare LSU’s draw to Iowa’s in terms of national TV audience.

Rick replied to the topic This is part of the problem in the forum Basketball (Men) 8 months ago
I am only speaking for myself here but my lack of in person support is really a combination of things. First, all of the games are on TV and when it is 15 degrees outside and snowing, I am not a fan of going out to watch something I can see at home. Second, I hate watching bad basketball. No sport pisses me off more than basketball when it is…[Read more]

You are a double digit lead and a big man who shoots 50% from the line on the floor and you don’t immediately take him out? Happy for the win but I am getting so tired of lazy coaching. Talk about court awareness! It doesn’t just apply to players.

I completely disagree with this initial post. Just because the current state of the program looks bleak does not mean that it has been bleak except for the Majerus years. If you look at the history of our head coaches, only 2 coaches in our entire history have had losing records. Only two had .500 records (Craig Smith and Joe Cravens, who was…[Read more]

Rick replied to the topic Disgusted with this performance in the forum Basketball (Men) 8 months, 3 weeks ago
Smith’s teams have been notoriously bad on the road pretty much his entire tenure. Why? They consistently play poor perimeter defense, they consistently turn the ball over, they consistently shoot below .500 on free throws, and they typically get out rebounded. I do not see how he survives this loss because it is not going to get any easier next…[Read more]

Rick replied to the topic Deivon and a blow out in the forum Basketball (Men) 8 months, 4 weeks ago
Deivon was great and so too was Bajema. It was nice to see some in game consistency where we got off to a great start and just kept playing good ball throughout. There were a few points in the second half where things were starting to go off the rails a bit and Deivon righted the ship and got everyone under control. A solid effort by the team…[Read more]

I think your “pros” around recruiting the portal are a bit too kind. I think most of his portal recruits have not been very good at all and, even though at times you can make cases for Madsen and Smith, both players are pretty inconsistent. Remember that Smith was pretty non-existent in the loss to ASU which was an absolute killer for us in…[Read more]

Rick replied to the topic All-Decade Utes (2014-2023): UPDATED in the forum Football 9 months, 2 weeks ago
Huntley over Rising is odd. Fitts over Dimick is criminal. I get sad when I look at those WRs. The 2008 team had more talent at WR than this all decade team does!

Rick replied to the topic Free Throws difference in game in the forum Basketball (Men) 9 months, 2 weeks ago
It would be one thing if it was just a bad night at the line but this team has stunk at free throws all season long. Back in the stone age when I played the sport, our coach would make us stay after practice and shoot 100 free throws before we could leave. If you shot poorly from the line during the games that week you had to shoot even more…[Read more]

Am I the only one who absolutely hates the graphic design work done on Utah football social media posts? I know they are trying to do that hip, urban graffati look but it is sometimes almost impossible to read. Rant over.

I never said it was better or worse with JJ. I just said he does not run like a big back even though he is a big back. I was not one of those that thought the sky was falling because he entered the portal and left. I know we can do better because we have done better and had better backs for pretty much the past 20 years. Names like Warfield,…[Read more]

Rick replied to the topic The question none of us want to ask in the forum Football 9 months, 3 weeks ago
I love how everyone laments on here about us missing JJ’s size. JJ did not use his size one little bit when he ran the ball. He was NOT a power running back by any sense of the term. He ran high, had very little lateral quickness, and was both injury and fumble prone. Am I missing something here? Just because he was big in actual stature does…[Read more]

Rick replied to the topic An Updated Look: Utah's running back room in the forum Football 9 months, 3 weeks ago
Learn how to do the tush push and then you don’t need a short yardage back. Plus I think Woods is going to eliminate a lot of that need. If Glover of the second half of the season shows up and is bigger/faster/stronger through off season workouts then we will be just fine at RB depth because we all know what Bernard brings to the table.
