SackLakeCity started the topic Observations, Thoughts, and Utah Football going forward in the forum Football 7 years, 1 month ago
After watching the game last night I had one thought that kept coming in my head….it was that Utah is one of them. It was no longer a thought of if Utah belonged in the PAC-12, but how Utah is one of them. Utah has carved out an identity within the conference that no matter if they lose they will give it everything they got and will beat the…[Read more]

SackLakeCity started the topic Next Level for Utah Football becoming a National Program in the forum Football 7 years, 1 month ago
Utah really needs to drop the BYU game every year and I say this as the spawn of a Utah and Cougar. Instead of playing BYU every year Utah should schedule on neutral site game every year against one of the name schools from the SEC, BIG 12, or Big 10 similar to what they did when they played Michigan.
The year Utah beat Michigan and beat…[Read more] -
SackLakeCity started the topic Executing the Offense The QB, The Past, The Present ,The Future in the forum Football 7 years, 1 month ago
So I have been thinking lately about some of the best football years in recent memory…Alex Smith 2004, Brian Johnson 2008, Travis Wilson 2015, etc…I think the thing that stood out the most was how the quarterback executed the offense.
The 2004 Smith year was unbelievable, I have never seen an offense ran that effectively or efficient ever in…[Read more] -
SackLakeCity started the topic Travis Wilson vs Tyler Huntley in the forum Football 7 years, 2 months ago
I have often talked about how Travis Wilson should get more respect as an All-Time Great Quarterback at Utah, the guy was a winner, a warrior, and a Utah man. He gave it everything he had to Utah and left as the All Time winniest QB if I remember correctly. He was also the starting QB for some of Utah’s best wins as a program, ie Stanford and…[Read more]

SackLakeCity started the topic Utah vs Miami revisted in the forum Basketball (Men) 8 years, 11 months ago
So I have been thinking about Utah’s style of Basketball vs Miami’s style of play. (I realize it has been a while since they played, but just barely put this together)
Utah plays a great fundamental based basketball game based on passing, movement, and utilizing the strengths of the players. This is credit to a great coach. I think Utah’s…[Read more]

@beehiveute…great analysis! 100% agree the biggest coaching deficiency is not defining the offensive identity and understanding why it makes sense to run it considering the assets Utah has and the recruits Utah can get, and what advantage Utah might have by running a certain system. It seems like the offensive identity is a week to week thing.…[Read more]

SackLakeCity started the topic Football Special Season in the forum Football 8 years, 11 months ago
This is something I have been thinking about lately, what would constitute a special season. I think far too often as fans we compare everything to the 2004 and 2008 seasons, but now we are in the PAC 12 I think we need to adjust those comparisons to the current realities. I would say a special season for the PAC 12 would be anything over 9…[Read more]

A comment on QB’s the last 10 years…I never want to see Tommy Grady or a Jordan Wynn type quarterback run the read option and keep the ball, it goes against the laws of physics.

@westslopecutthroat I would say my main strategy for Utah going forward is getting the angry JC kid. Although I would limit the angry JC kid strategy to mainly Wide Receivers, Running Backs, and Specialists. I would also want to plan and sign one linebacker and dt/de from Snow College every year to provide depth and fill a need. I would also…[Read more]

@whistleofmoose great analysis! totally agree, I would also mention a problem of having to be in a situation where we had to start Travis Wilson as a unprepared freshman, the ball was totally dropped after the Brian Johnson/Brett Ratliff qb era, Jordan Wynn was good, but couldn’t handle the wear and tear of the D1 level.
Also I agree with you…[Read more]

it seems like over the years, Utah has been able to get good wide receivers…I guess I would wonder, how would the good receivers in the past do vs the current PAC -12 defenses? Would that have been able to get open? I’m thinking about David Read, Freddy Brown, etc…the fringe NFL types Utah has had over the years.

So I have really liked being a part of this forum because it has a lot of really good analysis and thought and provides a deeper discussion on the actual problem instead of just talking about the need to fire a coordinator or change quarterbacks. Although those are the two biggest factors in the offense, it is a more complicated problem than just…[Read more]

SackLakeCity started the topic Devontae Booker Tribute Thread in the forum Football 8 years, 12 months ago
I think with the announcement today of Bookers injury it puts an end the career of what I would call the greatest Ute running back of all time. Lately I have been really paying attention to the way Booker plays and I would say he is a running back that has done more with less than any other running back I have seen. The way he can turn a 1 yard…[Read more]

@beehiveute Good comment! I really want to figure out what the offensive identity should be for Utah. I also think Travis gets too much of the blame, dude’s a warrior! If Utah had a quarterback with maybe better skills but less of a warrior, Utah would not have been 9-4 last year nor 8-2 this year. Another quarterback wouldn’t have lasted this…[Read more]

@yodaute Not necessarily start Manning, I am not just thinking about next year, but thinking long term and generally about what the offensive model / scheme should be and who would work best. I guess at this point I have come up with who typically success at Utah and what has driven Utah’s success, the next step would be to identify the scheme…[Read more]

@maximumkungfu I agree with you on your last point, I would double down on what Utah does well and create an offensive identify that works with what Utah can get and the demographics. One point that I heard today on Gunther is how the receivers don’t block and can’t get open. I wonder if with a different scheme that works better with who Utah…[Read more]

After reading some of the comments and giving it some more thought here is what I think here would be the best strategy going forward. To an extant I think Utah is already doing most of this, but I would want to overemphasize it.
Offense: Run a Stanford offense that fluctuates on being more or less dynamic depending of skill of QB we can…[Read more]

Great comments! I see the ideal Quarterback being a quarterback who can hit most of the throws and has a few designed runs. I loved some of the things that Washington’s QB did last week, I saw a few roll outs and a bootleg that worked well, obviously he looks like he will be really good, but it didn’t seem like those type of plays would require a…[Read more]
