Staples started the topic Runnin' Utes Night in the forum Basketball (Men) 6 years, 6 months ago
(I refuse to call it Night with the Utes, it will always be Runnin’ Utes night). Surprised not to see any posts about the basketball team, but I guess that Tuttle thing is a pretty big story. Curious what people’s impressions are for those that attended. With the usual caveat that you can only tell so much from a scrimmage, Barefield, Vante…[Read more]

Staples replied to the topic Amazing Punting Statistics Through 7 Games in the forum Football 6 years, 6 months ago
This got me curious so I went through the play by play for each game and figured it out. Through 6 games he’s averaging 44.5 yards per punt and on average he’s kicking from the Utah 36. Factor in the small amount of return yards against and his net punting efficiency, or whatever you want to call it, is 67.3%. For comparison’s sake, our…[Read more]

Staples replied to the topic If any of you were some of the people that led to Tonga disabling his twitter in the forum Football 6 years, 7 months ago
The play was featured on Sportscenter, wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of the people attacking him were lowlifes from throughout the country.

Bring back Marcroft!

What are you talking about, Capra was shown as being in the starting lineup on the video board before the game. Apparently we spent all our production effort on designing elephants for Ivory Homes first downs instead of ensuring the starting lineup was correct – or at least didn’t include a player who is out for the year.

I’ll give them credit for the “Saturday is a special day” shirt because that is a solid Mormon culture reference.

Staples replied to the topic Beehive classic at the Delta Center tickets are on sale now: in the forum Basketball (Men) 6 years, 8 months ago
Beehive Classic is a good idea with so-so execution. It would be nice if the game was just included with our season tickets rather than having to spend another $60 for decent seats. They wonder why attendance was lower than hoped, there’s your starting point. We stayed for both games last year but not everyone wants to do that so you’re paying…[Read more]

Staples replied to the topic Who is Utah Football's rival and why? in the forum Football 6 years, 8 months ago
I would definitely say non-geographical rivalries can change by sport, even within a conference. We’ll always be rivals with BYU in every sport because of proximity, but look at the WAC/MWC days – a very heated rivalry with New Mexico in basketball that wasn’t nearly as intense in football (despite their penchant for dealing us a WTF loss every…[Read more]

Staples replied to the topic Beating the '84 Cougs in the forum Football 6 years, 9 months ago
Maybe we could schedule their ’80 Miracle Bowl team. Sports-reference.com has it rated as the Coug’s best team according to their simple rating system with McMahon at QB, Whittingham’s at LB, AND Tom Holmoe on the roster. Incidentally, 2004 is rated our best team using the same measurement, followed by 1929 under Ike Armstrong.

I’m taking my chances with the ’04 team. Urban and Kyle? That will work.

I wasn’t surprised Simmons won, but I was surprised the voting wasn’t closer.

Those Coca-cola promotions were awesome, they need to bring them back.

Staples replied to the topic Utah’s 2018 nonconference schedule continues to be beefed up in the forum Basketball (Men) 6 years, 10 months ago
I really like the schedule Larry K is putting together this year. Good chance we lose the game with Nevada, but even a loss would be more entertaining as a fan than some of the blowout victories we’ve had on the non-conference schedule the past few years.

Staples replied to the topic Star Wars nerd discussions or the casual moviegoer in the forum Misc 6 years, 10 months ago
To me the original trilogy will always be in a separate category simply because they were the films I grew up on. Anything after that, here’s my ranking: Rogue One, Force Awakens, Solo … everything else. Last Jedi would probably be next ahead of episodes 1-3, but it’s also been the first movie of the “new” releases starting with TFA that I…[Read more]

I would say that Capela is definitely the better defender in space, while Gobert is the better defender at the rim.

Staples replied to the topic Utah AD search committee in the forum Other Ute Sports 6 years, 12 months ago
I like that idea, though I might make all 3 of the “open” years guaranteed match-ups with BYU in the Vegas Bowl, with the given outs you mentioned for the better bowls. Once we get into the lower tier bowls, I’d much rather play in Vegas with a big crowd, while also freeing up the regular season schedule for more A opponents.

He’s also improved his outside shot tremendously. His shot always looked good so you could see the potential but it never translated completely at the college level.
