Staples started the topic Hanno Mottola on ESPN700 in the forum Basketball (Men) 3 years, 8 months ago
I didn’t get a chance to catch the entire interview, but Hanno was just on with Bill Riley and gave a really interesting perspective on what direction the Utes program needs to go. In a nutshell, the game has changed and to paraphrase “you can’t play 90’s style basketball anymore.” Instead we should be recruiting (and preparing) players that…[Read more]

I’m curious about the underutilized statement. He basically saw the second most amount of touches on the team behind Delon Wright. Kuzma and Chapman are mixed in there as well but didn’t see the same amount of minutes. So unless you’re saying that the ball should have been taken out of Delon’s hands more …. I just don’t see it. I know the…[Read more]

Staples replied to the topic Honest question: opinion of Larry K suspending TDS game? in the forum Basketball (Men) 3 years, 8 months ago
I didn’t like the fact that he cancelled the game because I’ve always enjoyed the rivalry games even when they get chippy. But I did enjoy how much it upset all the Cougar fans, they still haven’t been able to let it go.

Mentioned this on Twitter, but my out of the box, never going to happen candidate would be Becky Hammon. She’s destined for an NBA job (personally I think she’s lined up for the Spurs job whenever Pop decides to step aside) so I’m not even sure she entertains an interview request from us, but from all reports she has the coaching chops and the…[Read more]

Andrew Bogut mentioned on his podcast that Majerus would never make it today’s environment. Bogues didn’t sugarcoat how Majerus was (the good and the bad) and all it would take now days is one disgruntled player to leak a clip from practice and it would be all over.

Staples replied to the topic I'm particularly interested if these coaches will be holdovers or not??? in the forum Basketball (Men) 3 years, 8 months ago
Not obligated, but if a program fires your dad you’re probably not going to be thrilled with said program.

Noticed that as well. Has to be because of Rudy and Donovan testing positive and being the home of the Jazz it’s pretty certain that someone from the station had enough contact with the players or broadcast team to warrant quarantine for all as a precaution. Just strange that there wasn’t any sort of official announcement.

Staples replied to the topic Kansas and Duke opting out of the NCAA tournament. Likely we'll see it cancelled in the forum Basketball (Men) 4 years, 8 months ago
I think it was inevitable anyway given the direction other sports are going, but with big names starting to pull out it becomes a certainty. Guess I’ve got next Thursday and Friday off to hang out at home and watch movies or something.

Staples replied to the topic How much better is acceptable next year? in the forum Basketball (Men) 4 years, 8 months ago
20+ wins, NCAA tournament bid. At the very worst we need to be a bubble team. Problem is, that’s with an assumption that transfers of key personnel are kept to a minimum. I could see Battin looking elsewhere: lost his starting spot late in the year to Jantunen and could be odd man out for playing time next year. His leaving wouldn’t be…[Read more]

Haven’t been down to the conference tourney since the MWC days. It can be fun to watch that much basketball but it’s pretty pricey when there’s a good chance (especially this year) that it will be one and done for the Utes.

Staples replied to the topic Utes at Stanford Game Discussion in the forum Basketball (Men) 4 years, 9 months ago
This game was a perfect encapsulation of why this season has been frustrating. First half it looked like we’d never even practiced before and as the turnovers piled up I texted a friend that 20 points should be our goal – for the game. Second half we clearly made some coaching adjustments (proving competency is at least possible) and had two…[Read more]

Staples replied to the topic Is anyone else concerned that we are running Rylan Jones into the ground? in the forum Basketball (Men) 4 years, 9 months ago
As others have said, I’m not sure Larry has much of a choice given that we don’t really have a natural backup PG, but I do think there’s some cause for concern. He’s really only shot the ball well twice in conference play (Oregon State and Wazzu) and you have to wonder if that’s a combination of hitting the natural freshmen wall, the fact that…[Read more]

He can enjoy a couple of years of retirement then slide right into the DC spot when Scalley takes over the top spot from Whitt.

A statement from the team’s head coach Kyle Whittingham reads, “We were made aware of the very serious allegations involving a member of our football program and he was immediately suspended from all team activities. We have since been informed that Terrell Perriman has been arrested by the Salt Lake City Police Department. Obviously, this does…

Staples replied to the topic Either Way it's on Larry in the forum Basketball (Men) 4 years, 10 months ago
You’re not wrong and the stats back it up. Allen has by far the highest usage rate on the team (30.9%) and is only 7th on the team in offensive efficiency. It’s not all on him because someone has to try to score sometimes, but there are definitely times when as soon as he gets the ball you know it’s going up regardless of the defense.
