stbone replied to the topic Will Vaki move to the offense full-time? in the forum Football 1 year, 1 month ago
With motion (Money Parks), we will have a very interesting option set-up. Vaki in the FB role, JJ in the QB role, and Money as the pitch man. It would be deadly and unexpected.

stbone replied to the topic The Utes 2023 defense is much improved. Why? in the forum Football 1 year, 1 month ago
I think the development of the DL, and specifically the DEs has been critical to the improvement of the D. We are now getting better pressure with the front 4 than at any time since at least 2019. (we already have 22 sacks vs 33 total in 2019). To show how good the current front four is, for the year in 2019, the front four had 22 sacks in 14…[Read more]

We are a newblood program that is on a path that in 2-10 years could lead us to becoming the next Oregon. We aren’t a blue blood program, and anybody who thinks that is smoking something good.
But, we have a clear upward trajectory in performance and recruiting. (7 of the all-time top 25 recruits are on the current team). In the past 5 years we…[Read more]

My point is we have never really been that successful at HS RB recruiting and most of our success has been from the portal.
Also, it is too early to judge if Jaylon pans out.
Last, assuming Ty lived and continued how he was his first year, the past two years would have been his show. His absence makes HS RB recruiting look worse than it is.

Devonte Booker – Transfer
Joe Williams – Transfer
Tavion Thomas – Transfer
JJ – TransferTy Jordan – Recruit
Zack Moss – Recruit
Micah Bernard – RecruitI don’t think there has been any drop off. Most of recent our success with RB has been via the transfer portal.
Also, regarding Jaylon, Zack Moss wasn’t a violent runner until something clicked…[Read more]

I think the appeal will fail.
However, I do not believe there was an indicator of targeting, and thus there should be no targeting call. Specifically, there was no launch that was BOTH forward and upward. Also, the only other potential indicator of targeting that seems relevant (Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to…[Read more]

stbone replied to the topic Kansas runs a similar offense to Utah in the forum Football 1 year, 1 month ago
Also, strangely for having a quarterback with the speed of NJ, we are not threatening the edges. We could get by without passing if we threatened the edges with jet sweeps or option. If we aren’t going to pass, we should probably call Fisher DeBerry and see if we can borrow his offense.

stbone replied to the topic Shocking News From John Canzano in the forum Football 1 year, 1 month ago
My issue isn’t that Canzano wrote the article, my issue is how he attempts to paint Randall in a poor light. It is only when you read the details that it becomes apparent that (1) Randall wasn’t working alone, and (2) Randall had the right strategy. The fact that he tries to make Randall look bad, even though the facts point to Randall having made…[Read more]

This story about Randall is a nothing-burger and is the most recent in a long-line of people taking ludicrous positions while arm-chair quarterbacking.
The article states that the PAC12 schools had their valuations all between 40-45MM dollars. The article says these were from multiple consultants. Any negotiator would try to get very close to the…[Read more]

I was wrong, and it turns out our coaching staff was likely either lying or was irrationally optimistic.

I just heard Cam say he tore his ACL, meniscus, PCL, and MCL. Sounds like it was more serious than I had hoped. Given the extent of the injury, the offseason moves (or lack thereof) become less tenable.

stbone replied to the topic QB rumors I heard on the radio this morning in the forum Football 1 year, 1 month ago
That is what I mean. There are facts that would make the coaches off-season behavior completely reasonable, and there are facts that would make the off-season behavior unreasonable. But, we don’t know those facts and we can only guess at them. But, if the injury was a grade two tear, it would have been completely reasonable for coaches to expect…[Read more]

You are making big assumptions about Cam’s injury. I have not read anywhere that it was a full ACL tear, or the specific details of the severity of the injury. I have only seen it referred to as a torn ACL.
Based on Cam not being on crutches and walking around the Rose Bowl, it seems that this wasn’t nearly as serious an ACL injury as Kuithe’s or…[Read more]

I agree that 5 games of pathetic offense with bad trend is very concerning. But, I start losing hope for humanity when fans start saying that either Whit of Ludwig should be fired because this is all there fault and that Ludwig doesn’t know how to call a game.
Did Whit/Ludwig make mistakes to get us to this point? Maybe, but I don’t have the…[Read more]

stbone replied to the topic Imagine what it must be like to be in the DB room preparing to play Utah in the forum Football 1 year, 1 month ago
I wouldn’t go quite that far. Lol. But, there is a significant difference between the play calling in the Baylor game vs. the play calling against UCLA. Seems like the most likely explanation for that difference is that offense had to win against Baylor vs. not lose against UCLA.

stbone replied to the topic Imagine what it must be like to be in the DB room preparing to play Utah in the forum Football 1 year, 1 month ago
Funny thing is, you compare NJ’s 4th quarter Baylor drive to the UCLA game, and you see that it is not his abilities that are limiting the offense, but risk aversion and playing to win. Based on that 4th quarter drive and his play against UF, we have a more dangerous offense than indicated by our stats, just not an offense that we flaunt around very often.

stbone replied to the topic Risk vs Reward in the forum Football 1 year, 1 month ago
While I agree with you in theory, the reality of the UCLA game dictated extreme caution in play calling. Early in the second half, Johnson threw what should have been a pick 6, and managed to fumble an exchange. After that, there was really only one choice left, and that was to run up the middle.

stbone replied to the topic In a perfect world, but it ain't perfect. in the forum Football 1 year, 1 month ago
I think there are two separate issues, (1) what is best for Cam, and (2) what is best for the team. There is a lot of overlap between these two, but there are also some differences.
Stepping back from cold and rational fan analysis, when to return to play is probably the most consequential decision Cam has ever made. Many of his childhood dreams…[Read more]

Reading posts last year, I saw fan complaining about how the defense was too soft, and how coaches should have gone harder in camp. This year, we are saying coaches should have gone softer in camp. As far as I can tell, no matter what, we won’t be happy.
Given what I have seen, I wouldn’t give up the current defensive production for Brandon Rose.…[Read more]

I will be disappointed if this is the end of Kuithe’s career because, before he was injured, he was starting to show the kind of route-running/ability to create separation that I thought could have gotten him drafted despite his lack of measurables. The injury gods are particularly brutal, and Kuithe wouldn’t be the first to have a career derailed…[Read more]
