stbone replied to the topic Imagine what it must be like to be in the DB room preparing to play Utah in the forum Football 1 year, 2 months ago
I wouldn’t go quite that far. Lol. But, there is a significant difference between the play calling in the Baylor game vs. the play calling against UCLA. Seems like the most likely explanation for that difference is that offense had to win against Baylor vs. not lose against UCLA.

Funny thing is, you compare NJ’s 4th quarter Baylor drive to the UCLA game, and you see that it is not his abilities that are limiting the offense, but risk aversion and playing to win. Based on that 4th quarter drive and his play against UF, we have a more dangerous offense than indicated by our stats, just not an offense that we flaunt around very often.

While I agree with you in theory, the reality of the UCLA game dictated extreme caution in play calling. Early in the second half, Johnson threw what should have been a pick 6, and managed to fumble an exchange. After that, there was really only one choice left, and that was to run up the middle.

I think there are two separate issues, (1) what is best for Cam, and (2) what is best for the team. There is a lot of overlap between these two, but there are also some differences.
Stepping back from cold and rational fan analysis, when to return to play is probably the most consequential decision Cam has ever made. Many of his childhood dreams…[Read more]

stbone replied to the topic Utah's QB dilemma in the forum Football 1 year, 2 months ago
Reading posts last year, I saw fan complaining about how the defense was too soft, and how coaches should have gone harder in camp. This year, we are saying coaches should have gone softer in camp. As far as I can tell, no matter what, we won’t be happy.
Given what I have seen, I wouldn’t give up the current defensive production for Brandon Rose.…[Read more]

stbone replied to the topic Josh Newman on the status of Utah football in the forum Football 1 year, 3 months ago
I will be disappointed if this is the end of Kuithe’s career because, before he was injured, he was starting to show the kind of route-running/ability to create separation that I thought could have gotten him drafted despite his lack of measurables. The injury gods are particularly brutal, and Kuithe wouldn’t be the first to have a career derailed…[Read more]

It is awesome to see Moss running with the same abandon in the NFL as he did at the end of his Utah career.

I grew up in CO as a CU and a CSU fan and can tell you, from a fan’s perspective, it isn’t a rivalry.
Since 1983, the series is 25-8. The game can be chippy at times (Bradley Van Pelt years), but generally it is a one-sided blow out. The chippiness usually starts from the CSU side, because their players know they weren’t good enough to be…[Read more]

CU’s rival is Nebraska, not CSU. CU/CSU is no more of a rivalry that Utah/Utah State. CSU get’s up for the game, but, the history of the game is ridiculously one sided, and the game is only meaningful in that a CU loss let’s you know that they really suck.

stbone replied to the topic Colorado boxscore – future 5-7 Colorado in the forum Football 1 year, 3 months ago
I wouldn’t discount the result yesterday based on it being a rivalry game. The real rivalry game was the week before. CU and CSU is a rivalry just like Utah and Utah State.

stbone replied to the topic Please, no more Barnes. in the forum Football 1 year, 3 months ago
I don’t think that lots of the criticism of Barnes is fair. He had a bad game BU, but it seemed to get significantly worse after the bad pick. That seemed to completely blow his confidence which led to him holding the ball too long and making more bad decisions. I don’t think Barnes has the ceiling to justify giving him time/chances to work…[Read more]

I misread the title as “Caleb Williams father on CW being a #1 PRICK”. That story would have been more interesting, although this story seems to support the story I thought I would read.

As a quick aside, Scalley isn’t racist, and so his remarks aren’t racist. Offensive, yes. Racist, no.
Aside from that, our recruiting has continued to improve since Scalley’s texts became public, and so those texts appear to mostly be a non-event that I wouldn’t use as a guide in making any decision.
The problem I see with Ludwig is that he is…[Read more]

Park City is beautiful right now, with warm days and cool nights. While you are up here with your kids, check out the Olympic park in Park City. They have freestyle ski shows and training, where you can watch skiers do tricks off jumps and land in a pool. Over at Park City Mountain Resort, they also have a bunch of activities set up at the base of…[Read more]

I can’t remember if we know the severity of the ACL tear.
Apart from that, a QB recovering from an ACL is a bit different than recovering from an injury to their throwing arm because you can, to some extent, manage risk of further injury via play calling.

Unless Kuithe has a ridiculous year, I agree, 6-7th is probably about where he will likely get drafted. My response was specifically directed at the comment pointing to CFL/XFL as his ceiling.
To your point, I don’t know that the NFL is much better at projecting talent than a magic 8 ball. But you are right, the scouts do have their template and…[Read more]

Shannon Sharpe was a tweener who ended up a top-5 TE at 6’2″ 228 lbs. Also with a pretty pedestrian 4.67 40 time. Kuithe seems like he could slot into that role pretty well. Especially with the improved route running he was showing before his knee injury.

TT had the best vision of any RB we have had in at least the past 10 years, and he hit holes hard. Utah running game was night-and-day when TT first started coming on last year.

Delaying failure is pretty close to success, especially as the delay: (1) bought TT time to fix his life (even if he didn’t take advantage of it); and (2) kept people from getting hurt during that year.
Also, that one year advanced the program. How much of current recruiting success is based on the first P12 championship and the first RB…[Read more]

No first P12 championship or first Rose Bowl without Tavion. Last year was clearly a disappointment, but Whit (apparently) got Tavion to put his life together for one year. I wouldn’t call it a failure.
