I agree that he is not prototypical, and he has a harder path. I think he had the athleticism to pull off being an undersized TE, we will see if he still has it.

Shannon Sharpe (6’2″, 225) disagrees.

The team is still trending up, and consistently improving. We don’t have the depth of a top program yet, but our depth is much better than it was a decade ago. We had weakness up the middle on the defense at LB and at safety. Fix these issues, and this is a much better team. Also, not having a top TE threat today was brutal.
This was a disastrous…[Read more]

That is the amazing part. The team has progressed to a point where we almost win games against top-tier teams when we have bad days. I am glad to see the team progress, but disappointed at the lost opportunity.

The frustrating part of this game, is that this is one of the first big games that we DIDN’T loose because of the talent differential. Maybe UO has better recruits, but our talent matched up with theirs incredibly well. We didn’t loose because we were outclassed, but because key positions didn’t execute.
While, lots of this loss is on Rising,…[Read more]

stbone replied to the topic I would do everything we possibly can to get an elite transfer WR and or TE in the forum Football 2 years, 1 month ago
Peak Covey was uncoverable. Best option was to play zone and hope the QB would hang him out to dry so you could break him at the catch. But, not a no. 1 receiver. He provided a very overlapping utility with Kuithe, in that they both primarily attacked the same part of the field, albeit in different ways.

stbone replied to the topic Sorry if I missed, did JQJ get hurt? I thought he looked great and was running in the forum Football 2 years, 1 month ago
What seems to make Tavion a special running back is his vision. He seems to almost always make the right cut, which leads to a lot of arm tackles that he is able to run through. This is his big advantage over JJ in my mind. I think JJ is a better athlete, and if he can develop TT-style vision, will be incredible.

What seemed absolutely out of control was the resetting of the clock. It is hard to view that as anything other than a blatant attempt to help U$C win.

To me, it looks like everybody is playing man defense except JT on that play. Vaughn, Phillips, and Bishop stick with their men. Definitely was a lot of contact between the TE and Bishop, but it looks like they both wanted it.

100% agree.
The line this year is probably better than the line last year, but we do not have all-university Devin Lloyd and Nephi to fill every hole, to generate pressure, and to scare offenses. I think so much attention was put on Devin, that the d-line looked infinitely better.
As far as I can tell, Karene lacks high-end speed, and Diabate…[Read more]

Against Florida, Fillinger often went too far upfield and allowed himself to be kicked-out/took himself out of the play. He doesn’t seem to be doing that anymore. In the touchdown on the reverse, Fillinger squeezed on the block-down, and staid in position. He wasn’t athletic enough to stop the reverse, but it is a big ask to expect the DE to run…[Read more]

stbone replied to the topic Defensive concerns in the forum Football 2 years, 2 months ago
I don’t think he was out of position. He had to follow the down block to prevent the formation of the cutback lane/to prevent getting kicked out. With how far the down block moved, he was left with something like 2/3 of the field to cover, which is an impossible task given the speed difference between him and a full speed reverse.
I am curious…[Read more]

Bam and Fotheringham on the left side were unstoppable road-graders. TT not being on his game is hurting, but the lack of Bam and Fotheringham is weighing very, very heavy.

Anybody who knows Morgan for more than five minutes knows he isn’t racist, and that includes the kids he recruits and their families. It was pathetic to see the media go after him like they did, but it was awesome to see former and current players and the community rally around him.

@chinngiskhaan – I don’t know if you meant to take a shot at coaches with your post (and I almost always agree with your take on games so I doubt you were). Anyways, every every year, at about this time, all of the boo-birds call for Scalley’s or Whit’s head, and it isn’t justified. The program (coaches) consistently yields amazing results, all…[Read more]

Initially, I don’t like how Utah and the modern game coaches linebackers to play.
That said, Utah consistently and dramatically improves players games at every defensive position from year to year, and this is especially the case at linebacker. I had no faith in Cody Barton, and then, he became brilliant. I had no faith in Devin Lloyd after his…[Read more]

I agree that losing Nephi and Devin has been detrimental to the defense, but I don’t think it is fair to say that these players covered for coaching deficiencies. Rather, the greatness of these players was due to the coaching.
