But where are the jobs?
My experience is that if you are willing to live in the geographic area where the schools alumni cluster, then it is very beneficial. But, once you leave that area, the benefits drop off. For example, the Stanford network will get you much farther in the Bay Area than it will in NYC.
Maybe it is different between business…[Read more]

My own experiences have shown that alumni networks are regional. Because of this regionality, an Ivy League degree is not worth near as much East of Massachusetts, and I suspect a Stanford degree is not worth very much outside of CA. YMMV, but I went to a big name, top 5, east coast law school, and the name and alumni network get me next to…[Read more]

stbone replied to the topic An uneducated prediction as to where Ute players are drafted in the forum Football 2 years, 11 months ago
It will be interesting to see where he goes. What I think is interesting about Bam is how he became physically dominant by the end of the season. At the beginning, he still looked lost. It will be interesting to see if teams are willing to gamble based on his tape from the last couple of games. Physically dominant and huge left tackles are pretty rare.

Re-reading my comment, I overstated the similarities between the two. I agree completely that there are huge differences between the two, that is why I said I think Bam is a round 3-5 guy, whereas Bolles was a round 1 guy. But there are also significant similarities in the way that peak Bam at the end of the season was physically dismantling…[Read more]

I don’t know that Bam is too much different from Bolles. He may be a bit more raw, but he also lacks the bad habits and poor discipline that Bolles had. Combine his size and love of dishing out pain, I’d place him at 3-5.
Mostly, I need spring football to come quick.

stbone replied to the topic Question about defensive scheme in the forum Football 2 years, 11 months ago
The other thing that illustrates the talent gap is draft position of players sent to the NFL. It is very rare for a Utah player to be drafted on the first day. So, while Utah is placing numbers of players in the NFL, those players end up being back-ups and role players. This largely comes down to the fact that Utah coaches are getting their…[Read more]

This variant is kind of weird – not the severe but has strange aches. Best wishes on a quick recovery.

stbone replied to the topic Defense wins champioships in the forum Football 2 years, 11 months ago
While I love defense, the phrase “defense wins championships” has become a lie. It is very rare in the modern era that a defense is so transcendent as to win a championship. The last time I clearly saw this was in SB 50 (Broncos v. Panthers). To win, you need a combination of defense and offense, which was what made this team so special. Give the…[Read more]

stbone replied to the topic So many things went our way – I didn’t think Ohio St. Could overcome it. in the forum Football 2 years, 11 months ago
As a fan it is easy to overlook the talent differential. CPIII was our best and most consistent player on the field, and yet he would have been one of the lowest rated players on the field if he had gone to OSU. Now, imagine that game again, but if every players for Utah was at least CPIII.
A huge positive, although OSU was favored, they were the…[Read more]

stbone replied to the topic How can Utah build a program like this but CU can't? in the forum Football 3 years ago
It is interesting to note that there are many similarities between 80/90’s CU and Utah. Bill McCartney was HC at CU for 12 years and slowly build and developed the program. They had a very physical (option) style and recruited specific players for that style. I hope Utah can become as successful as those CU teams.

I think the Utah 2021 offense is clearly better than the 2019 offense, but mostly because of significantly improved receiving threats and dominant OL play.
Comparing the 2019 receivers to now, the current receivers are significantly better. With Covey being out, the best receiver of 2019 was probably Jaylen Dixon, who is now buried in the depth…[Read more]

I don’t care if he kills someone in Sudan. I do care if he kills someone closer to me, or anybody from one of my tribes (my country, my state, my city, my school, etc). We let him in because we believed that he would strengthen us. Clearly that wasn’t the case.
If he isn’t one of us, he isn’t our problem. Once he committed his first crime, we…[Read more]

His previous booking records indicate he isn’t a U.S. citizen, but is Sudanese. The failure to deport a criminal led to this tragedy. I’m sure glad we virtue signaled and welcomed refugees.

stbone replied to the topic Should we do a daily feature on Ute Players…What do you think? Devaughn Vele: in the forum Football 3 years, 8 months ago
I think you missed my point.
Demand is driven up by ratings. Not being rated hurts demand. You don’t give scholarships to players that you can get without a scholarship, because not all players pan out.

Recruiting rankings have everything to do with whether you offer a scholarship. A coach’s job is to get the best players at the lowest cost. Because Devaughn was unappreciated by rankings groups, the demand for his services was very low, and Whit was able to get him very, very cheap.

stbone replied to the topic Should we do a daily feature on Ute Players…What do you think? Devaughn Vele: in the forum Football 3 years, 8 months ago
There are frequently concerns because Devaughn is a walk-on. This was not because of his lower-level athleticism, but rather because his HS did not feature him. Devaughn’s HS team was very run-heavy, and so Devaughn was not featured in the offense. However, Devaughn did everything he was asked to do (he was brought in as FS at key moments in big…[Read more]

Agreed that those teams are the challenges for the U, but I think fans are typically too pessimistic on U receivers, and blame receiver quality on lack of passing game production. I disagree and believe this has more to do with offensive scheme or with limitations in QB ability to sense and respond to pressure. Utah has 2-3 targets that are…[Read more]
