stbone replied to the topic Scalley to be 'very involved' in process to hire future OC in the forum Football 2 days, 19 hours ago
This is how every high-level offense used to be. Even for skill positions, it was very rare to see a newly drafted player in the 80’s and 90’s immediately transition to NFL success, rather, it usually took a couple of years for players to learn the system. (Also, it was fairly common for a new coach to not have their offense fully in place until…[Read more]

After last season, the consensus on this page was the Devaughn absolutely was not an NFL receiver. If it was just a distribution issue, I don’t believe that that would have been the case.
While distribution is certainly an issue, it is very rare to see a Utah receiver open in broken coverage or creating quick separation. This makes me thing that…[Read more]

What is most damning about WR coaching/offense is that we are putting WRs in the NFL, and they are usually better in the NFL (against better competition) than they were here. For example, Devaughn is a starting WR for the Broncos, beating out Troy Franklin. Yet, we couldn’t get him the ball at a level corresponding to his talent.

So, effectively, there is no recourse, and there is no accountability. The lack of accountability is particularly surprising in the world of sports where accountability is king.

I am fine with what Harlan did. (to me, being upset with what he said/did is a form of ton-policing that focuses on style over substance). There is absolutely no accountability for referees, and he did what he could. The fact that nobody else goes full-Harlan is part of what has brought us to this point.

Grabbing any part of the helmet, including the chinstrap is a face masking penalty. A copy of the rule is below:
“No player shall grasp and then twist, turn or pull the face mask, chin strap or any helmet opening of an opponent. It is not a foul if the face mask, chin strap or helmet opening is not grasped and then twisted, turned or pulled. When…[Read more]

Our DB’s missing pick 6s has now cost us two games (Houston being the other). We seem to be afraid to make big plays.

To the facemask – there are only two people who know what happened, Rose and the DE. Based on the head movement, including after Rose was on the ground, something was grabbed. What I think happened is, in the replays you can see the DE’s hand contact Roses helmet near the earhole at about the jaw line. I suspect, based on Rose’s head movement,…[Read more]

I don’t think Logan is all the way back from the knee. Villinger is playing better than I expected, by COT just never seems to stay healthy long enough to get into rhythm. I think we are also really missing Coke Bishop coming off the edge on blitzes. We don’t have anybody with that level of speed and violence, and we frequently end up a half-beat…[Read more]

For the most part, these don’t seem to be S&C-type injuries. E.g., we aren’t seeing torn/pulled hamstrings. There is some argument for how you handle quads contributing to knee stability, but a little extra knee stability only gets you so far when somebody flies into the side of your knee or rolls-up your leg.

stbone replied to the topic Whitt, Scalley and my random thoughts. in the forum Football 3 weeks ago
I agree 100% with this take. I think Scalley will end up being a great head coach, but it will likely take him a couple of years to grow into it, just like it did with when he became DC. But, once he grows into the role, he isn’t going to leave. We will be able to have another 20 years of stable and top-notch coaching. We can’t risk the coaching…[Read more]

The worst was the reverse/QB pass at the start of the 2nd half in the Penn State Rose Bowl. Everything went sideways after that call.

My experience is that if you are training right, the bulk adds speed and athleticism. I can’t imagine they aren’t being trained right.
If I had to guess, a foot injury probably cost him his entire off season of lower body training. On top of that, he probably continued his upper body training. (Not being able to train lower body could give rise…[Read more]

I disagree with this at many levels.
First, the majority of championship teams are among the most physical in college football. For example, Michaigan, Georgia, and Alabama are among the most physical teams I can remember over the past couple of years. I think lack of physicality is one of the reasons why PAC12 teams (ORE) didn’t win the…[Read more]

I hope we do. I have dreams at night about Wilson occasionally running the option with Micah or Money as the pitch man. That would go a long way towards keeping the defense from teeing off on our interior run game.

stbone replied to the topic Talent and speed or lack thereof in the forum Football 1 month ago
I don’t think speed is an issue, and generally, I think speed is overrated. To clarify, by this I mean nearly everybody has top end speed, and so pure speed isn’t a differentiator. As an example of this Devaughn Vele ran a 4.47 at the combine, Marvin Harrison Jr. ran a 4.46, Jackson Smith Njigba ran an unofficial 4.53 at the combine. I am sure…[Read more]

I agree that Lander doesn’t look like he did in the past, but the sample size with Karene back is so small I don’t feel like I can say one way or the other. The LBs looked significantly better yesterday than they have for a while, and I hope that the improvement continues.
