I totally agree that there is no real monetization. The “investment” by a booster in NIL is one with extremely limited (if any) financial returns for the booster. It is essentially a hobby for the booster. But that has largely always been the case. There is no real financial return to donate large sums to an athletic department or buy a box seat.…[Read more]

But how exactly is Clark hypocritical? Has he stated that he supports Ryan Smith sponsoring an athlete? Does he have the ability to prohibit Ryan Smith from paying an athlete? Also, how are BYU fans hypocritical in this? For supporting a booster paying an athlete to go to the school they support? Did they collectively say that they would never…[Read more]

Look, I understand the gripe. But is Clark Gilbert paying the athlete? Is the athletic department paying the athlete? If Nike wants to pay a guy to sign with Oregon, does the Oregon Athletic Director get to void that contract? What is Clark Gilbert’s role in deciding whether a booster can pay an athlete? The whole point of NIL is that players get…[Read more]

Stone replied to the topic New Mexico 2024 Rushing TD’s: 37, Utah: 7 in the forum Football 1 month, 1 week ago
I do not think anyone is disputing that New Mexico played weaker competition than P4 conferences. But all four of the OCs that were being considered (Washington State, Texas State, UNLV, and New Mexico) are all at that same lower level (New Mexico was essentially in the same conference as Washington State and UNLV). So the critique would apply…[Read more]

Arbuckle was head of the 22nd ranked offense last year.
Leftwich was head of the 6th ranked offense last year.
Beck was head of the 4th ranked offense last year.Beck has more experience at the FBS level than either of those other guys. Spent many years in ACC at Virginia and then at Syracuse. I recognize Arbuckle and Leftwich were hotter…[Read more]

Stone replied to the topic No Trust For Whittingham on Offense in the forum Football 1 month, 1 week ago
It is almost as if it has very little to do with the OC or even the Head Coach (in terms of schemes and approach), and almost entirely dependent on the QB. We can certainly blame the lack of a good QB on the coaches (recruiting/development), but based on those numbers above, it seems like the play-calling and schemes are far less important that…[Read more]

Do you have info that Scalley would not agree with a Beck hire?
I do not have strong feelings about any of the names being floated for OC, but I would assume Scalley will have plenty of input on the hire.

Stone started the topic Wilson debacle is on Whit in the forum Football 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Anyone with eyes that see can discern that Utah’s chances of winning are better with Rose than Wilson. The same is true for Bottari. Who knows about Huard (seeing as Whit closes all practices).
Wilson may one day be a good or even great college QB. But he is CLEARLY not there now. I would be fine with that if there weren’t clearly better QBs…[Read more]

Stone replied to the topic Kuithe injury in the forum Football 2 months ago
I disagree. There is definitely some contact pre-limp, but the limp comes after he plants on the left foot to change direction. The contact prior does not look malicious. Nor does the subsequent contact where Kuithe goes down. It looks like Kuithe collapsed from the injury on the change of direction and the defender does not expect the sudden…[Read more]

Stone replied to the topic Honest question that I know I’m going to get murdered over in the forum Football 2 months ago
It is the best angle. Thank you for sharing. It changes my mind. Whether the call should have been made in that situation can be debated, but Utah’s defender definitely grabbed the receiver’s jersey and held. The subsequent facemask by the defender came afterward. I no longer question whether there was a hold on the play (I previously did).
Even…[Read more]

Lots of the criticisms here seem to be envy and a misunderstanding of NIL.
I think every fan base wishes they had a Phil Knight or Ryan Smith as a booster. I sure do. That said, I think NIL has caused my interest in college sports to diminish–I am still a HUGE fan, but my interest has certainly not increased since NIL. Because the genie is never…[Read more]

Stone replied to the topic Reid and O'Toole injury update? in the forum Football 2 months, 4 weeks ago
Although I sort of understand the potential gamesmanship and advantage of not saying if a star QB is playing (although I fall on the side of more disclosure), it boggles my mind that the coaches think there is ANY advantage in not disclosing the return timetable of someone like Reid. Maybe I am wrong, but I do not think opposing teams are changing…[Read more]

Middle aged Utah white guy thing? Do you really think that only middle aged white guys in Utah wear their hats backward? Seriously? Have you ever looked around you when outside Utah? It is a common practice among people of all skin colors, of all ages, in all geographic areas. Does everyone do it? No. But it is hardly some cultural practice unique…[Read more]

To clarify, I believe Utah recruited more of the top ten in-state players than that, but that is how many signed with Utah. Your point remains the same (in terms of success trends for signing in-state recruits). But I want to clarify the distinction because the original poster on the other thread made it sound like Utah was not even recruiting the…[Read more]

You say this:
“If Utah really wants to secure their future, they need to swing for the fence and recruit the local kids.”
Is Utah not recruiting these local kids? Or is Utah just not getting commitments from them. I assume Utah is swinging for the fences and trying to recruit them (maybe I am wrong), but recruiting them only goes so far, there…[Read more]

Correction to the Athletic: Maybe my math is off, but Cam has missed THREE full games (Utah State, OK Stat, and Arizona). And the first full game without him was not OK State, it was Utah State.

Stone replied to the topic Cam Rising seen in Splint yesterday signing autographs in the forum Football 3 months, 2 weeks ago
Here is my gripe with this whole situation. If the injury is actually bad, then the blame for this IMO lies with Whit. Whit has downplayed the injury, which leads most observers to assume that Cam is a pussy and has no heart or desire to play.
Whit has the notion that there is strategic advantage to downplaying the injury because then other…[Read more]

In years past, I have signed-up for FUBO, which allowed me to record all Utah football games and watch them when I had time (typically, my Saturdays are too busy to allow me to watch games in real time). But my understanding is that FUBO is not going to work to get all of our games this year (although, maybe I am wrong).
What suggestions does…[Read more]
