The thumbnail of the design is not terribly appealing to me. But other images I have seen are pretty nice. I am not a fan of the stained glass portion.
I doubt it brings much tourism, but I like the idea of grand monuments generally. People mention the St. Louis arch, Eiffel Tower, etc. They don’t necessarily drive tourism, but they add to the…[Read more]

I think the needed distinction is between the size of a school’s endowment and the amount of money available for basketball (or sports). In other words, size is not everything, it is how you use it. <that’s what she said>

This is the only way forward without killing college sports entirely. The current structure is absurd.

Welcome to sports. The concept of loyalty to a program/team died decades ago. Burgess is the norm, not an exception (Whit is the exception, not the norm). This is the reality. And frankly, I am fine with coaches jumping around – would you or anyone else be “loyal” to an employer that is likely going to fire you in a year? It is a job, not a family.

I enjoy the rivalries of college football – including Utah and BYU. So this is not to denigrate the original post. But to the extent there are those that think the rivalry is dead and we should move on (I have seen many that take that position), I would present this post as evidence that it is not and never has been: Exhibit A: a post about Utah’s…[Read more]

If he were sent back, would it be with the promise that he would serve prison time there? If not, then I would definitely not be in favor of sending him back, at least not until is sentence is fully served. Otherwise, it would be a “get out of jail free” card, literally.

Assuming this is a sincere question (although seems troll-ish), the answer is yes, BYU needs athletics boosters. Every institution has funding priorities. The U of U is funded by a state with a budget of approximately $29 billion for year 2025. very large budget, indeed, and the U of U itself has a multi-billion dollar annual budget. So one could…[Read more]

He is bringing the NHL to SLC – every owner of every major sport team asks the local city and team for support (financial and otherwise) for their franchises. This is not a scandal. He also happens to be a huge booster of BYU sports. He also owns the Utah Jazz. He is a billionaire that lives in Utah and loves sports. You obviously do not need to…[Read more]

Good for him. Truly. I wish I had the money to do that. I also with there was a Utah booster doing that. I am envious of the situation.

Dude is a stud. I have coveted him for awhile, and wondered how the Utes missed on getting him originally. Also somewhat expected him (and the other top players there) to transfer given the conference’s demise.

Don’t worry. With the internet, you’re never really that far away. Back in my day, I had to have the Sunday sports page from the Deseret News mailed to me every week so that I could read about the Utes. I was getting the news probably two weeks behind by the time I read it. It was still fun.

Stone replied to the topic Ranking total NIL spend in the forum Football 10 months, 2 weeks ago
It seems like this is the way things are going. Nearly all college sports go back to their origins as club/intramural activities. Then the revenue producing teams break off as stand-alone professional entities with a licensing agreement with the corresponding schools. Those entities form a league (essentially, NFL minor league). It seems inevitable.

These are not the schools paying the players, it is donors. You can make the case that the donor money would have gone to the school if not to the player, but that is speculative. I would actually prefer the schools be the ones paying the players, since it is the schools that are gaining revenue from the ticket and broadcast right sales. It makes…[Read more]

I am still watching, because of my loyalty to the Utes, but I can feel my interest waning. Frankly, the move to the Big12 will be telling for me. I do think my interest in the games next year will be significantly less than this year. Bowl games do not really interest me anymore (they did at one time). I used to watch a lot of college football -…[Read more]

I echo the frustration felt by many on here.
There are some that think the expanded playoffs will help the situation, but IMO it is only a matter of time before star players opt out of the CFB playoffs the same way they opt out of bowl games. What does a star player get out of a playoff game appearance? There is no extra money, only extra injury…[Read more]

How is he being booed? That conference is still alive. Sure, it’s not the SEC, but it’s also not the Pac12 (tear).

The new era is going to get out of control quickly (if it is not already). There needs to be some rules put into place, akin to the NFL, NBA, etc. Salary caps, free agency periods, etc. College football is functioning like a professional league, but without any of the rules/safeguards to protect the product from devolving into chaos.

Regarding coaches, are we prohibited from having a paid consultant (not officially a coach). Not sure of Klingsbury’s role with USC (maybe he is officially a coach), but he has been seen at many practices and likely provides valuable input and coaching.

College football needs to consolidate and get a salary cap and free-agency rules figured out. This is getting out of hand quickly.
