tarheelute started the topic Transfer Portal Rules – Are there any? in the forum Football 2 years, 9 months ago
Does the transfer portal have rules similar to recruiting, i.e. visits, contacts? Are teams allowed to contact a player prior to their transfer announcement, or can say a team like USC cherry-pick the best players that say Wyoming or Colorado have developed? I think even the NFL does not let their teams contact or negotiate with other teams…[Read more]

tarheelute replied to the topic What are your thoughts on buying and showing off Rose Bowl merch? in the forum Football 2 years, 10 months ago
I will wear/use my Rose Bowl (Polo, Hat, couple running shirts, and a shot glass) with pride, happy with the 2021 championship, happy still with attending the Rose Bowl game. Money well spent all around. I have a Utah-Alabama Sugar Bowl hat that I have worn out, a Sun Bowl hat that hangs in my game room. But I don’t know where my Holiday Bowl…[Read more]

tarheelute replied to the topic This year vis a vis 2004 and 2008. in the forum Football 2 years, 10 months ago
For us older fans, the progression provided key dates, when we new things had changed. The twin 34-31 wins cleared the template with defeating BYU and winning the MWC as bell-weathers. I was angry/disappointed with the firing of McBride, but it turned out to be clear message from the UofU AD that expectations had changed. Obviously, the 2004 and…[Read more]

tarheelute started the topic How did OSU neutralize the D-Line; Lloyd? in the forum Football 2 years, 10 months ago
My seat was not the greatest on Saturday, and I won’t get to watch the broadcast until ESPN repeats later this week.
So, what did OSU do than neutralized the Defensive Line and the line-backers, particularly Lloyd? If that is not a fair assessment, please advise.
What I saw was congestion in the middle of the lines, with most of the action…[Read more]

tarheelute started the topic Tussle After the Game – Punch thrown by Tevita Fotu in the forum Football 2 years, 10 months ago
Some Ohio State fans are not happy with Tevita Fotu. A video shows him taking a swing at an Ohio State player at the end of the game. Not a great look, but isolated with no damage done. I expect Coach Whittingham will make a learning experience from this.

The Utes are the best chance for PAC-12 recognition this year. The Oregon “Lame” Ducks in the Rose bowl is a letdown for them and the PAC-12, considering earlier CFP expectations. The Utes are the only team with expectations that can be reasonably met at the Rose bowl.
I view yesterday’s game against the Buffs as a well-timed wakeup call, s…[Read more]

tarheelute replied to the topic Oregon – Utah matchup in the forum Football 3 years ago
The coaching staff will address special teams and penalties. My worry is the defense, not that they will be bad, just not good enough – without some preparation and focus this week – which I expect. Oregon has watched the tape of the Utah-Arizona game. If Arizona’s offensive scheme caused mix-ups by the Utah secondary, Oregon may try to do…[Read more]

tarheelute replied to the topic Could this be true??? in the forum Football 3 years ago
DNA notwithstanding, I agree that Whittingham could not accept losing on the 20th as a strategy to go to the Rose bowl. And how do you coach players play to lose? – purposely miss a tackle here, drop a pass or a punt, there, etc. Seems unethical to contemplate, certainly to execute, similar to throwing a game.

tarheelute replied to the topic Key to beating ASU in the forum Football 3 years, 1 month ago
I like Utah at home. Similar to 2018, doubts from early loses to Washington and Washington State, diminished after with the big win over USC at home. A big game the MUSS and us other fans showing up in support leads to a big win.
Utah 38, ASU 24

I am a realistic optimist, but I am not a “homer” optimist. However, it took letting McBride go the get Urban Meyer. I’m not so sure we find another to replace Coach Whittingham. Sink or swim, I have enough bourbon to weather the losses. I will stick with the Coach for as long as he is willing the stay.

Flying back from San Deigo in 2018, I was thinking maybe the Holiday Bowl was the best the Utes could expect. Fast forward to 2019, a similar result in Texas. After a glass or two (or three) of bourbon during Saturday’s game, my mobile pinging with text messages, as the BYU half of my family gloated, I wondered again; did the Utes reach its apex…[Read more]

Tyler was very good but not great in my book, and the best QB since joining the P12. (better than other recent QBs Troy Williams, Travis Wilson and Jordan Wynn). No par with past greats he is behind Alex Smith and Brian Johnson.
– After a mediocre 2017 season, Tyler led the Utes to a win in the 2017 Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl (2/26, 165…[Read more]

Looking forward to next week!!

tarheelute started the topic Special Teams a worry anyone? Not so much. in the forum Football 3 years, 2 months ago
Special teams allowed a touchdown, and cost the Utes an extra point. Is eight points enough to swing a game against the Utes, say the in-state team next week?
I expect the coaches with nine days to prepare will have the kick-return game fixed. And one (1) missed extra point missed in the last 75 is generally good kicking.
Otherwise I think…[Read more]

After 40 years as an adult watch Utah-BYU games
The reasons BYU is the better team now:
– BYU dominance in the 70s/80s – old news
– 1984 National Champions – by vote, not by beating the better teams – a good team no doubt
– “.. the Lord steps in… Magic “happens”, not fit but for “pumping my gas” – player mindset

The Utes are not sneaking up on anybody this year. The cost of getting consistently better. Also goes to how the Utes played in the short 2020 year, the commitment of the returning starters, and aggressive recruiting on the transfer portal.
Go Utes!
