The Miami Ute replied to the topic Medical Marijuana is such a stupid topic. in the forum Politics 1 week, 5 days ago
This article from Johns Hopkins takes into account both sides of the issue:
The Evidence—and Lack Thereof—About Cannabis
Some summary points:
1. Does cannabis have viable medicinal uses?
The evidence is mixed at this point. There hasn’t been a lot of funding going into testing cannabis in a rigorous way. There is more evidence for certa…[Read more]

There’s a profit sharing agreement with the players on the horizon. Preparation for that is one of the main reasons why Oklahoma State forced Gundy to restructure his contract.

That’s what I’m thinking…it should be once a year right after the end of the Spring semester…you could even keep the 16-25 April that’s already there. Sports and NIL are really starting to affect the university experience to the extent that I fear a backlash will be coming soon.

Check this out…Through the first 72 hours of the portal being open, these schools lead the way in losing players: Arkansas (25), UCF (22), Purdue (22), Kentucky (20), Arizona (19), Nebraska (19), Mississippi State (19), Texas A&M (18), Arizona State (17) and Virginia Tech (17).
Four programs have been hit especially hard when it comes to…[Read more]

The Miami Ute replied to the topic DAMPIER COMMITS TO THE U in the forum Football 2 weeks, 1 day ago
One of the problems with the current system is that there aren’t any real contractual obligations. Dampier could sign with Utah, start pocketing NIL payments, and then jet on April 25 having done absolutely nothing for the Utes. Damien Martinez waited until he received his last $100K NIL check from Oregon State and then immediately transferred…[Read more]

Talk to me once football season starts. In the new environment, Dampier could have a great spring camp, be offered by another school, and be gone before he ever even played one game for Utah.

The Miami Ute replied to the topic NIL vs University employees in the forum Football 2 weeks, 1 day ago
Rick, the road to hell is paved with good intentions and not all change is progress. I have to imagine that the federal government will be forced to get involved if we start seeing a system where athletes, a huge of number of which are minorities, no longer have an opportunity to attend college (in essence, become disenfranchised) because the new…[Read more]

The Miami Ute replied to the topic THINK ABOUT THIS …. in the forum Football 2 weeks, 1 day ago
The answer is really simple. If you as a fan don’t like the current product on display or the ecosystem it’s in, then opt out. I haven’t watched an NBA or MLB game in over half a decade, and I’ve been a huge fan of baseball and basketball for almost my entire life. Once some time passes, you realize that you don’t miss the sport and you’re…[Read more]

The Miami Ute replied to the topic NIL vs University employees in the forum Football 2 weeks, 1 day ago
Likely the end game is that big-time college football is restricted to 30-40 schools, which is exactly what the networks want, and everybody else just drops sports altogether in a competitive manner. Think about it, why would an educational institution all of a sudden be beholden to sports in general and add a thousand more “employees” that…[Read more]

The Miami Ute replied to the topic Idea to fix this mess. Multi-year contracts. in the forum Football 2 weeks, 1 day ago
Personally, I think that, in some undetermined future, when athletes are considered school employees, a number of schools will cut the cord with organized athletics. I fully expect that to be the case with the high-end academic schools like Cal, Stanford, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, and many others. What I think will happen is that the academics…[Read more]

The Miami Ute replied to the topic Idea to fix this mess. Multi-year contracts. in the forum Football 2 weeks, 1 day ago
Once they’re determined to be employees of individual schools, I would think that’s what’s going to happen. It’s absolute, utter bullshit that you can devote time and resources on a specific player and then have some other school sweep in and scoop the player up at no cost to itself.

The Miami Ute replied to the topic Cameron Calhoun to the portal. Ouch! in the forum Football 2 weeks, 2 days ago
A combination of the networks and naked self-interest by players is going to kill college football as we know it. Without any guardrails or ground rules that everyone has to play by, then fans’ entertainment dollars are going to go elsewhere and college football will become a worse version of the XFL.
