This was a setback, for sure, but was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Toga! Toga! Toga!
We are gonna need to scrap, but the opportunity is there to try to climb the mountain again, and I hope we are up to the task. We really do have some talented players in the pipeline, even at QB, and especially on the lines, which bodes well…[Read more]

thirtyfour-thirtyone replied to the topic NCAA FBS split is starting in the forum Football 11 months, 3 weeks ago
Yeah, the implementation of things like this are always weird. I support the general idea of Title 9, but some of the impacts were brutal. Many schools had to cut many men’s sports to make the numbers work. I suspect this will have a similar impact.
It sounds like schools that are not current P-5 football members will be left out (at least…[Read more]

The NCAA has officially proposed splitting off the P-5 into a new division that will directly pay student athletes. One implication is that Title-9 will obvious apply to direct payments, so the gymnasts might rake in some more cash 🙂

All this time Whit and Rising have been playing the long game to fool Dan Lanning. He’ll never see it coming. Or maybe Rising used his NIL money to buy himself a seat in section L.

thirtyfour-thirtyone replied to the topic Vaki love in the forum Football 1 year ago
That play where Vaki plants both feet, comes to a complete stop, then runs around half the USC defense into the endzone, is one of the most outrageous plays I have ever seen from a Utah player. He’s stout enough to play linebacker, but he’s quick like Covey.

thirtyfour-thirtyone replied to the topic Who Has a Better Offense, USC or Oregon? in the forum Football 1 year, 1 month ago
Oregon has much better coaching, especially in-game. If they are getting 4+ yards per carry, unlike USC, they will not stop doing that all night long. They will also have a well-thought-out plan to stop Vaki. They will probably not help us win, like USC occasionally does.
That said, if there is a blizzard on Saturday, maybe we pull out…[Read more]

It would be kinda fun for the whole crowd to be waving WSU flags in solidarity.
My aunt used to say: “Oops, stepped on a duck,” whenever she farted. I might try to work that in somehow.

thirtyfour-thirtyone replied to the topic Whitt said that Rising could come back next year. Do we want that? in the forum Football 1 year, 1 month ago
I would be ecstatic if he returned next year. He has taken Utah to two PAC-12 championships, which is really the pinnacle of Utah football.
It really is decision time for that sort of operation I think. If he doesn’t return this week, there is not much time left this season. I would think playing next season (possibly with Kuithe?) would be…[Read more]

thirtyfour-thirtyone replied to the topic Shouldn't our offense be better? in the forum Football 1 year, 2 months ago
In his PR thing on Monday, Whit specifically mentioned he would like to see the offense take more shots down the field. I would love to see that happen. Weber State seems like a great opportunity to try to really stress that.

thirtyfour-thirtyone replied to the topic Kuithe interview on ESPN700 in the forum Football 1 year, 2 months ago
He has heard things like that he is being held out to wait for Cam or waiting for conference play. He seems upset by these comments.
Some of us need to take a step back and calm down a bit. We all want Utah to win. We all want the best quarterback on the field, and want every DB to pick off every pass.
We could probably get by with a little…[Read more]

thirtyfour-thirtyone replied to the topic Source? in the forum Football 1 year, 2 months ago
From the UteZone article: “Ja’Quinden Jackson has practiced all week and it would be very surprising if does not play Saturday.”
They also sounded positive about Curry potentially being ready. There is a reason Vincent is not at the top of the depth chart, but he is serviceable, and I would love nothing more than to see him tear up Baylor.

I guess Florida fully gave up after their final forth down play. They probably could have been a bit more aggressive in stopping our time wasting at the end, and even though they weren’t, they still could have forced Utah to make a fourth-down play with 14 seconds on the clock (they had a timeout left). 14 seconds is probably not enough time to…[Read more]

Well, Barnesjohnson scored more than enough points, and had zero turnovers, so I’m on board.
Who knows how good Florida really is, but they sure have some athletes. Our ability to stop their running backs was impressive.

If game day comes to town, we should all bring WSU flags, or RIP signs or something.

thirtyfour-thirtyone replied to the topic Some improvement I’d like to start the season. 1) The DLine starts strong in the forum Football 1 year, 2 months ago
There were a lot of “hurries” last year that could have been sacks with a little more patience, and/or better tackling. Hopefully that will go better this year.
Also, if the receivers/tight-ends could bail out Barnes as much as possible by having velcro hands, and getting open regularly, that would be great.

thirtyfour-thirtyone replied to the topic Barnes in the forum Football 1 year, 2 months ago
I’m putting on my red goggles: Barnes is a Heisman candidate until proven otherwise, and he does have a perfect record as a starter.
Seriously though, I think he might play pretty well tomorrow night. If the Oline plays well, we run the ball well, and receivers get open, I think Barns will hold up his end of the deal. We just need to score 1…[Read more]

Here is a meta-paper on the issue: paper link
I had always heard that the “fly-in fly-out” strategy was second best to proper long term acclimation (i.e. better than the intermediate strategy of showing up a day or two before), but apparently there is not really much data to back this up.
High elevation does make for a solid home-field…[Read more]

thirtyfour-thirtyone replied to the topic Projected depth chart from the Deseret News in the forum Football 1 year, 3 months ago
That seems reasonable. Two things stuck out at me:
1) I thought coaches were talking about Spencer Fano potentially starting at left tackle (starting him off backing up the right side would seem to make more sense though).
2) I would expect to see more of TE #2 than WR #3, and I’m guessing that will be Miki Suguturaga in a Logan Kendall sort…[Read more]
