In light of it being the first season in a supposedly tougher conference (is UA not as good this year, or is the Big 12 tougher than the Pac-12?), with the weird alternate home and away scheduling, and trips out to the eastern time zone, I might have been inclined to give Smith another year. But 1-9 on the road, bad FT shooting and too many turnovers and frequent sloppy play, I agree with ripping off the band aid and moving on.

It’s not like Utah basketball fans are expecting national championships every season (as one person suggested on X). But we do remember when we made the NCAA Tournament most seasons, usually getting at least to the 2nd round, and that informs our expectations. No NCAA bids in 9 seasons is just not acceptable.

This just seems to explain so much:

A little advice for Alabama: Next time don’t lose to Vanderbilt.

Entering the transfer portal does not necessarily mean the player leaves. For example, last year Micah Bernard entered the transfer portal but returned to Utah and rushed for 1,000 yards.

The reality of the transfer portal: Players are going to leave, new players will come in to replace them. Only time will tell on how the change shakes out.

Not the sexy big name hire many Ute fans wanted, but might be a good pick anyway.

I saw a list where Utah was at 18.

Spread vs Pro set, but still run heavy.

The sexy big name hire would likely have been just as risky.

I am always trying to find the sweet spot, not too optimistic, not too pessimistic — realist, or whatever. The glass is full of both air and water.
