Now prisons can become big business again. So we know who benefits there, the prisoners, right?
I lived and worked in the Philippines for 10 years from 1985 to 1994. Class structure and the shear number of poor, particularly desperately poor, was a grinding realty and completely new to me. The rich lived in gated compounds, mostly with armed…[Read more]

From time to time, I link in economist Paul Kasriel because I think he is a very good economist. Here is his latest, this time on US manufacturing and NAFTA. -

Truth is we the people don’t know but we deserve to know. That is why I believe Congress owes it to the people to have an independent investigation (or 11) to find out. We must move on. Too many issues in our country to sort to allow suspicion to frustrate progress.
The charges are so serious and threatening to the US that I’m dismayed the two…[Read more]

I just wish the GOP in Congress would allow this…[Read more]

Not sure the magnitude of costs, but to be sure we all pay for other folks pre-existing conditions, so yes, insurance companies jacked up rates to cover that.
On the other hand, when many more folks had no coverage. Many stiffed the hospitals, or they went bankrupt or both. In the first case, that loss was borne by hospitals and some by the USG.…[Read more]

My view, which I know has little value. Just sayin’.
I don’t think Utah has peaked. Yet until the Ute staff can put together a ‘complete’ game, an exciting game, they are likely topping out for a higher proportion for higher ranked kids. Utah cannot compete against the trophy case of USC, Alabama, Ohio State, etc.
Despite what we have seen,…[Read more]

Easy to target Republicans. The issue is much broader in my opinion.
My thoughts align where: Can Corporations Be Trusted To Do The Right Thing…
Some folks believe government needs to get out of the way completely, let companies do whatever and be accountable to customers and shareholders only. I don’t want to live in that world.
