Yep, bad read by Covey and missed block by the RT sets up a 4th down. Then NIU stacks the box and you run right into it. Huntley either needs to check into a pass play or call a timeout and they need to punt, which I would have done there.

I wish I knew how to navigate that site, but it is somewhat arcane and I just am not willing to invest the time to try to learn how it operates.

I disagree with Hans on this one. If they are stacking the box you can’t run up the middle unless you have complete dominance on the lines which we did not have. The route was open and you have to trust your QB can make that throw and the WR can make the catch. That should have been a completion and you move the chains.

Sorry but Northern Illinois is a really good defensive team. As was pointed out they held Iowa to a single field goal until midway through the third quarter, at Iowa. This was going to be a tough game, and their defensive line is really quick.

I think the crux of his analysis come from the fact that he identifies Utah as a former mid major team, meaning they still are but just play in a power 5 conference. This team is nothing like those Utah teams in the early PAC 12 days. This will be a tough game, but we should win.

I think most Ute fans that discount NIU do so at a risk to your psyche. My son had a teammate on the squad in the late 80ish, early 90s, so I’ve watched them for a while. This team is very capable of a win despite the loss to Iowa. Iowa is very tough at home and has a pretty darn good defense. NIU is home and hungry for a win.

Really tough to take much out of this game, given the level of talent difference. But it was a nice game and a lot of positives there, plus some things the coaching staff can work on.

Huntley has some velocity issues, but it’s generally up to the receivers need to adjust to the throws. One issue with what appear to be questionable throws is the reaction of the receiver. One play in particular I noticed, I think it was Simpkins, is running a deep corner route. Trevor Matich made a good point this afternoon. How much do we want coaches delving into the lives of assistant coaches and players. If law enforcement has investigated and determined there is no infraction how far should the coach go to investigate. Sounds like Meyer did report something to the hierarchy, not clear when or what.

Qualifying is definitely an issue with him, but if anyone can support him enough to give him a shot it’s Utah.

O-line, because that’s really the engine that makes the offense roll. The line needs to step it up to establish the run and protect Hundley. I think D-line is also a bit concerning, but has shown the ability to step it up when they are doubted. Receivers is also an issue.
