One thing I’ve wondered about FPI/SP+ or any other statistical modeling of CFP, is how they account for Cam Rising and Brant Kuithe coming back. I don’t think they count as “returning production” since they didn’t play last season. I’m also a bit skeptical about PFF grading. They rated DJU 17th and Cam at 19, which is obviously a laughable r…[Read more]

It seems incredibly off for Randle to be able to pick up the position in less than 2 months, when Blocker has been here for 2 years.

  • There is no reason GA tech should be bad. They are in a recruiting hot bed and are a P4 team in one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the whole country. They’ve bad success in the past but their recent coaching hires drove them off a cliff. I’m excited to see what they can do this season.

Plus, I really love their uniforms and think they hav…[Read more]

  • I wouldn’t say Gilman and Bentley starting are surprising at all. I’m assuming Bentley and Ryan are gonna be in together in quite a few 2 or 3 TE sets, and that they will rotate often. Gilman was an all conference honorable mention at safety if I recall correctly. The surprising thing is no Blocker, CB depth is thin, WR depth seems a bit thin wit…[Read more]

I’m sure there will be a thread about the depth chart that was released but how long have you known about John Randle playing CB, and how has he looked there?

Im honestly surprised that very few people have mentioned Gilman as a key transfer. He was one of the more experienced players to join Utah, and at a position we lost both our starters.

Side note, what do you think about Whitted at WR coach compared to Bumphis?

  • I wouldn’t pick them personally, but of the 5 top favorites (Bama, Oregon, Texas, UGA, and Ohio State) they arguably have the best QB. That’s not to say that Gabriel is elite like Caleb Williams or Jayden Daniels, because he’s not. It’s just that Howard is ok, Ewers and Beck are good but overrated, and Milton is a wildcard. Milroe is a freak a…[Read more]

  • West Virginia should be good, but they have the most difficult schedule of any big 12 team. Even if they go 9-3 (7-2 in conference), their team would probably be so beat up at the end of the season.

  • Sort of a historical discussion, but what lead to Whitt moving away from the spread offense in 2011? He saw the great offenses with Urban, and even Ludwig ran the spread in his 1st stint here. So what caused Whitt to move away from the spread when it gave Utah so much success in the past?

Who are the SUU players he mentioned?

  • Well, it’s based on schedule too. Phil Steele projected Utah as a the third best DL in the country, but as the nations number 1 rush defense because of the teams we play.

I’m assuming for offense, they would project Utah to spread the ball out a lot more, since outside of Kuithe and Cam, none of our players are household names. Arizona has McM…[Read more]

  • Except being a realist would be this position: I don’t know how good our RB room will be. We have a good track record of developing RB’s, but we have no proven elite RB.

A realist isn’t going to dog on our RB room when they have no idea what it looks like.

Also, the way he talks about our RB’s make it seem like they will fumble every play or…[Read more]

I imagine they will probably limit it to 1-2 designed runs a game to keep defenses honest, but that it won’t be a focal point of our offense. Even Michael Penix occasionally ran last year.

  • 22Ute22 replied to the topic Injury Update in the forum Football 4 months, 2 weeks ago

I hope we see Rose or Huard (depending on who is 3rd string) play in the 4th. I’d like to see how Rose looks like in an actual game, even against an overwhelmed opponent.

  • So something I’ve wondered about our WR room is how much separation they can get and how fast they are. Dorian Singer, Damien Alford, and Munir McClain seem to all be more of contested catch type WR’s, rather than players with elite separation skills.

Pittman is unknown and I heard he had a slight injury that might keep him out of week 1. So is…[Read more]

  • None, except for seasons in which we get unlucky and draw all the farthest road destinations. For example, @UCF, @WVU, and @Cinci.

Big 12 fans saying stadium like Autzen or Husky stadium aren’t loud. The noise will not be significantly higher. It’s not LSU or Florida.

Big 12 fans saying that the 3-3-5 defense is something that Utah fans wil…[Read more]

  • That’s a very niche scenario…

Running backs are used way more than just on a 4th and goal. Plus, we also have other ball carriers for that if push came to shove. Kuithe or Carson Ryan could probably be used as an H-back in such a scenario. What big 12 D-line is stopping Kuithe at RB with Carsen Ryan and Dallen Bentley in at TE for blocking? The…[Read more]

  • I don’t think he said no more Cam Running, right? Just that they won’t need to run him very often due to the WR/TE being great in the passing game. I’d imagine Cam would probably get 2-3 designed runs per game to keep the defense honest, rather than the 5-10 he got before.

  • What genuinely made you think that a top 2 RB in the portal would choose Utah?

  • Even if true, RB is the least important position in the sport. With Cam and our WR/TE room, teams are going to have to respect the pass, which will open it up for the run anyway.

Still, it’s infinitely better to be in our position than Oklahoma State. I’d take Cam Rising and an unproven RB room over Ollie Gordon and Bowman.
