I remember when Utah was playing at Minnesota around 1990 or so and we were tied with a few seconds left and their all-conference kicker is attempting a field goal to win the game. Utah blocked it and ran it back to shock the gophers and win the game. Ron McBride ran the length of the field with the team to celebrate in the end zone.

Couple of other changes I can recall.

    1. Team can’t take multiple time outs at one time (most commonly this has occurred in past years trying to ice the kicker.
    2. (Rather insignificant) No longer will have an ‘untimed’ play when there is a defensive penalty on the last play of the 1st/3rd quarter.

Afraid that Utah and BYU fan bases are overwhelming some of the BIG 12 Facebook pages (even the ones that weren’t created in the last few months). On one of them, I just saw a comment (from a fan of one of the other schools) lamenting that there isn’t any football talk on that page anymore, just a battle of words between Utah and BYU fans.

A couple of incidents come to mind.

2009 the “Max Hall hates Utah” game. BYU fans are gleefully taking pictures of Kyle’s daughter who is tears after the game and at least one of them seemed ready to assault his wife when she took the phone out of his hand and threw it aside. (Yes she did throw it in a manner that could have damaged it but it…[Read more]

  • Colorado played Cal in a previously scheduled game first year the Buffs were in the PAC and it was kept non-conference not counting in the standings. So Baylor in 2024 may perhaps be non-conference. Quite probably any scenario of quads/divisions/etc. will have Utah and BYU together so the Holy War will be a conference contest.

Anyone joined the FB Big-12 Football Talk group yet? (Private group). I just asked to join a few minutes ago because I can see it was created back in 2015 (so very improbable to have an administrator from any Wasatch Front school)

Previously had joined (then soon left) a “Big 12” group run by an admin who censors Utah fans but allows BYU fans to…[Read more]

  • Hope you have a great time while visiting us DcGator (other than the result of the game of course).

The canyons are great places to visit (traffic gets worse every year so be prepared for a slow leisurely drive both directions).

Utah fans are generally fairly friendly (you do of course always get a few fools in any fanbase) and don’t listen…[Read more]

  • Have ESPN+ for other events already. We’re used to having a lot of the so-called minor sports (volleyball, soccer, softball, baseball) as well as gymnastics (really a major sport for Utah) available on PAC12. Will be curious in the next 12 months, what BIG12 events are available for streaming.

  • One observation. First year in the PAC, with USC on probation, we had a chance to beat Colorado (who had a long road losing streak) and get into the first PAC12 title game. Colorado surprised us and late in the game, a fan nearby noted that Utah had adapted to playing PAC teams and had a fairly good showing but were now facing a BIG12 style…[Read more]

Remind them what the series record is between us the last dozen years.

And as far as boats go, you could remind them that with Utah immediately getting a full share of media $$$$ (and BYU a partial share a few more years) it’s sort of like on ocean liners where Utah is in the first class section with the Cougars down in steerage.

  • Worked from the above link, one from another source kept dying/hanging.

  • Keeps freezing, perhaps too many viewers?

  • I put the most blame on the TV networks. Combination of not making any reasonable media deals to the PAC12 and far too many late night starts where football games often end at 2AM and basketball games end at 1AM on the east coast.

They envision a future with just a couple enormous conferences making far more TV money than any other of the lower…[Read more]

  • People online, especially when they can hide behind a moniker, have the potential to be far more disrespectful and condescending than they are in real life.

While regretting the breakup of the PAC12 (and losing the great rivalries we developed, in particular with USC, Oregon, and others), I look forward to new rivalries not only in football,…[Read more]

  • I can pretty much guarantee that within the next few years, the holy war will be back in November. Not what everyone may want but that is what will happen.

  • Playing BYU regularly the past 30 years (where we’ve had the upper hand, especially in the last dozen or so years) is a DAMNED more enjoyable experience than what us old-times went through in the 70/80s.

I will miss playing the Trojans. We’ve had some very exciting games (won some lost some) against them.

  • I suppose we may be able to get some games against former PAC members, both those that wound up in the Big10 as well as the unfortunate leftovers.

IF we wind up in the BIG12 (waiting until it is officially announced) we will now have potential non-conference opponents from western teams not currently in the MWC.

  • Sure the BIG10 and networks played dirty, but definitely a big reason for PAC12 imploding lies in not being able to get the PAC12 channel on Direct TV in over a (expletive) decade A staggering level of incompetence.

  • Not really much can be done. MWC had no recourse when Utah left for the PAC and BYU joined the WCC about 13 years ago and TCU headed to the BIG12 a few years later.

Dirty but legal what they did.

  • Moving from PAC12 to Big12 is a slight decrease in how attractive and prestigious the schedule is. But if we’re left out and are now in a PAC/MWC merger or even an expanded PAC (which adds some current MWC teams and possibly Hawaii) that would be a massive drop.
